  1. New Course at BCU BSc (Hons) Part time ‘Top up’ Degree Specialist Complex Needs Rehabilitation Work (Visual Impairment) Starting February 2016

Course aims Directed by a survey of what the sector wants and needs: Achieve full BSc Honours degree – in line with other professions such OT & Social Work Purposeful & meaningful CPD for qualified RW’s Link with RWPN aim of providing development for the profession Learn new specialist skills for working with a wide range of people who have additional complex needs Enhance employability.

  3. About the course Two years part time Full degree £4,800 individual modules £600 per 15 credit module Delivered with sector experts and specialist lecturers Face to face and online delivery Attendance at University in 2/3 day teaching blocks spread throughout each year: February: Induction & teaching week April: 2 days August: 3 days November: 3 days

Key Approaches to Complex Needs Rehabilitation Work (VI) - Double module worth 30 credits • Feb to April 2016 • 5 days face to face teaching You will study: • Aspects of Neurology and cognitive impairment • Person Centred Practice • Specialist communication & motivation • Assessing mental capacity • Positive behaviour support

Travel Training with People who have Learning Disabilities or Autism Single module worth 15 credits August to September 2016 2 days face to face teaching & attendance for a practical assessment You will study: Impacts of Learning Disability and Autism. Travel training techniques: the client group, service provision, eligibility, assessment and application of approaches. Risk assessment, personal safety and managing environments. Strategies to address anxiety & stress.

  6. Specialist Deafblind Assessment and Service Provision – Parts 1 & 2 Two single modules worth 15 credits each October 2016 to Feb 2017 6 days face to face sessions and attendance for practical assessment You will study: The expertise to meet the professional requirements for the provision of specialist deafblind assessment and services as outlined in the Social Care Guidance for Deafblind Children and adults in the Care Act 2014. Strategies to enable independence in daily living, communication and movement, orientation and mobility.

  7. Evidence Based Practice Single module worth 15 credits Online module April/May 2017 You will: Choose and appraise a specific area of practice. Enhance professional decision making skills based on the evidence. Develop abilities to make reliable professional judgements. Develop individual skills as a specialist practitioner

  8. Dementia and Older Adults’ Mental Health Conditions Single module worth 15 credits June/July 2017 2 days teaching What will you study: Physiological and functional impacts Therapeutic and psychosocial interventions Strategies to address indicators of distress, anxiety and depression.

  9. Specialist Professional Skills Single module worth 15 credits October/November 2017 4 days teaching What will you study: Counselling techniques Cognitive Behavioural Therapy. Brief solution focussed therapy. Emotional intelligence Psychological theories of motivation Coaching and leadership in your area.

  10. How will you learn? Face to face teaching: Lectures and small group work Case discussion sessions. Practical simulated sessions Online learning: Self-directed interactive online activities Discussion forums Access to specialist reading materials and journals Skype tutorials
