Background • 2002 : Commission Communication "Towards improved methodologies for Eurozone statistics and indicators", COM/2002/661 • 2003 : Joint Report of the Council and Commission on Eurozone statistics and indicators called for the development of a set of PEEIs for monetary and economic analysis • Recent years: EFC Status Reports on EMU • PEEIs Steering Group Eurostat – Unit D1 Key indicators for the European policies
The new PEEIs webpage • 16th October 2007: launch of the new webpage • A daily snapshot of the business cycle in the euro area and the European Union : A set of key indicators available in just one webpage • Providing media, policy makers, analysts, academics and the general public with a useful tool for decision making, economic analysis and research • Very encouraging feedback from users (DG ECFIN, ECB, EFC subcommittee on Statistics) Eurostat – Unit D1 Key indicators for the European policies

2008 Changes • Euro area enlargement in January 2008: Cyprus and Malta join the EA 15 • Current Account: • Monthly euro area data produced by ECB • In the past: evolving EA • Now: euro area 15 aggregate Eurostat – Unit D1 Key indicators for the European policies
