Aim: How did the Sui, Tang and Song Dynasties restore stability to China? June 5, 2014
Dynasties we have already talked about: Shang → Zhou → Qin → Han (ancient/classical dynasties): 1650 B.C. – 220 A.D. • Dynasties we are going to talk about now: Sui → Tang → Song → Yuan (Mongol rule) → Ming (golden age dynasties): 581 A.D. – 1644 A.D.
I. Tang Dynasty (618-907) • The Sui dynasty (581-618) united northern and southern China, built the Grand Canal (connecting the Yellow and Yangtze rivers) created a foundation for economic and territorial growth in China. • The Tang Dynasty will build on this, rule China for 300 years. They establish their capital in Chang’an. Bring peace to the northwest part of China and expand China’s power north of the Himalayan mountains into Tibet.
I. Tang Dynasty (618-907) C.Government and Economic Accomplishments 1. Restore the Civil Service Examinations. What were these? What information did you have to know? Who was allowed to take them? How were students prepared for these tests? What was the purpose of this system? 2. Took land from the rich, gave it to the peasants
II. Song Dynasty (960-1279) A. Shortly after the fall of the Tang, China is again unified under the Song Dynasty B. Song have a strong, united government in the south, but lose control of the north to nomadic tribes and other groups.
III. Footbinding • Foot-binding: Custom for upper-class girls. When a girl was young, her feet were bound tightly with cloth, braking the arch and curling all but the big toe under. This custom continues into the 20th century!

Beauty?!: In American society today, do we have any rituals or activities where people have to go through pain to achieve beauty? If so, are our values really any different from those of the Tang and the Song dynasties?
IV. Science and Technology • The Tang and the Song were responsible for some of the most important inventions in human history, all of which spread around the world thanks to the Silk Road: Porcelain, Mechanical Clock, Block Printing, Gunpowder, Paper Money, Magnetic Compass. • Which of these inventions do you think had the greatest impact on human history and why?
