  2. Steps to Solving an Equation • 1. Find and Factor out the Greatest Common Factor • 2. Determine the number of terms • 3. For a difference of two squares equation there will always be two terms • 4. Make sure to factor out completely • 5. Check by multiplying

  3. Notes: 1. Equation for a Difference of two squares – (a2– b2) or (a-b) (a+b) 2. The method of finding the product or answer of two factors is FOIL F – First O – Outer I – Inner L- Last 3. (a2 + ab – ab - b2 ) – middle terms cancel out

  4. Example Problems X2 – 36 (x – 6) (x + 6) X4 – 81 ( x2- 9) ( x2+ 9) (x - 3) (x+ 3) (x2+9) X2 – 49 ( x – 7) ( x + 7)
