Social and Economic Deprivation • 27% of the population live in shanty towns • 12.8% of the population are unemployed • 2,273 people are murdered each year • It has one of the highest crime rates in the world particularly drug crime • HDI in some areas is above Iceland (0.970) however, in other areas is worse than Iran (0.751) polarisation • One third of the population live in poverty • Poor access to healthcare

  5. 10% of the population are illiterate, people living in favelas 30.5% are illiterate • 20 doctors per 10,000 people (UK has 320) • Low access to water (77%), sewage (63%) and electricity (60%) • High air pollution • Low life expectancy can be up to 20 years lower for someone living in a favela • The top 1% of the population owns 14% of the national wealth which is the same as 50% of the poorest • Only two countries have a greater divide between the rich and poor

How are they trying to manage the problem? • Slum clearance and gentrification including high rise flats close to the CBD • The people from the slums were forced to leave and move outwards as they could not afford the rent of the new properties • The government has also introduced self help schemes in some areas to help improve access to services such as water and electricity • Government has offered incentives to move to rural areas

  7. $15.2 billion spent on home building to also increase employment
