HIV Life Cycle • Virus binds to CD4 protein on helper T cells • Fuses with cell membrane • Empties contents into cell • reverse transcriptase copies viral genetic material from RNA into double-stranded DNA • integrase splices into cellular DNA • cell makes viral proteins and RNA using provirus • HIV protease cleaves new proteins • new proteins join RNA in new viral particles • particles bud from cell and infect others
Types of T Cells HIV binds to CD4, but not CD8. Therefore, only Helper T cells are affected.
Course of Infection • rise of virus in blood which produces a drop in CD4 helper T cells • immune system recovers slightly, but HIV levels remain steady for several years • when CD4 T cell level drops below 200 cells per cubic mm blood, AIDS is diagnosed
