Annex 1 World Psychiatric AssociationBuenos Aires 2011 General AssemblyAgenda Item 7: Admission, Name change and Reinstatement of sections Prof. Miguel R. Jorge, M.D., Ph.D WPA Secretary for Sections
Sections Admission and Name Change • Admission of a New Section: Section on Evolutionary Psychiatry (approved by the WPA EC at an ad hoc basis on April 16-17, 2011) • Section Name Change: No proposal
Section on Evolutionary Psychiatry • Purpose: • Evolution is now perhaps the only framework that can accommodate and thereby help integrate biomedical psychiatry with psychotherapy and social medicine. Thus, in a perfect world, all psychiatrists should adopt an evolutionary perspective, so that there should be no need for a separate discipline of evolutionary psychiatry. But the re-introduction of modern Darwinian science to psychiatry - though vibrant - is a rather young enterprise. • A WPA Section of Evolutionary Psychiatry will join in this enterprise and so enrich all of psychiatry serve. • The main rationale for the establishment of the Section is to recognize the powerful integrative capacity that evolution brings to psychiatry. The WPA can substantially facilitate the promise that evolutionary psychiatry has to fill in many gaps in knowledge among the sciences (and humanities) that are the component parts of and its importance for both psychiatry and evolution.

Operational Committee* on Sections Summary of Considerations September 2nd, 2010 Beijing, China Members: Miguel R. Jorge (Chair) Michaela Amering Luis Salvador-Carulla (absent) Russel D’Souza Ron Winthrob
Operational Committee Considerations • Performance of WPA Sections was in general considered very good • Despite some particular problems, reinstatement of all WPA Sections were recommended, with feedback to be offered to them about their performances • Unless otherwise indicated by particular Sections or members, a recommendation was made to placing the names, countries and emails of all Sections members in the Sections area of the WPA website • Limitation to one official Section Symposium for the WCP penalize those more productive Sections and is not in favor of promoting intersectional collaboration
OC on Sections Suggestions to the WPA Planning Committee • Instead of a Chair and a Co-Chair, Sections needs a Chair and a Chair-Elected in order to guarantee a smooth continuity of activities • Elections for Sections Officers will be held by electronic ballots through email communication just before the World Congresses of Psychiatry and not in a meeting during the Congresses • Templates for a Sections By-Laws and Work Plan need to be developed and offered to them
