Preparation of Sermons • To preach the Scripture you must first know the Scripture • To know the Scripture you must engage in the systematic study of Scripture • This course will teach you how to construct and deliver Bible messages • This lecture will remind you of a method of systematic Bible study
2 Major Bible Study Methods Synthetic Method Analytical Method
First Method • SYNTHETIC METHOD • Seek to understand the entire book • Read for overall argument • Look for patterns that fit with other books • Look for motifs that occur in other parts of the Bible • READ FOR THE BIG PICTURE
Second Method • ANALYTICAL METHOD • This method seeks to look more carefully at paragraphs, words, sentences • Examine syntax, grammar, text, • Look for units and sub-units; structure • Look especially at genre, author, parallel passages • Identify main phrases and modifying phrases
The Analytical Method • The method you have been taught (or will be) , will be the method you will use for the rest of your time here at Knox • This method can be used for both New Testament and Old Testament exegesis (with minor changes) • A form of this is the method you should strive to use for studying for sermons
The Method Explained • 1. Textual Issues • 2. Lexical/Historical Issues • Important words • Intertextuality • Historical questions • 3. Grammatical Issues • Syntax- class will teach syntactical categories • Structural- how and why is the structure as it is? • Figures of Speech- Bullinger is helpful here
The Method Explained • 4. Exegetical- looking at many things together • Author, book, pericope • Redaction (if possible; Gospels, Jude-II Peter) • 5. Theological- fit your findings into the system of theology that the Bible teaches • 6. Christological/Typological- How does this passage speak to the reader of redemption? • 7. Read the Literature- read here because • It does not impinge upon your own thought • It helps to reinforce your own conclusions
The Sermon Constructed • After this method has been used to determine what the text says, then the sermon is constructed • The sermon asks three questions: • What- What does the text say? • So What- What does it mean today? • Now What- What am I supposed to do with this information now that I have it?
The Sermon Delivered • The sermon must be introduced • The sermon must have exegesis • The sermon must have application • The sermon must have illustration • The sermon must be concluded • The voice must be considered • Dress must be considered • Other delivery issues must be considered
