Can you think of a similar scenario whereby attention is directed and prioritised? • You are driving your car and talking at the same time. You come across a cyclist who is wobbling all over the road. It gives priorities to particular activities such as those described above.
Learning Objective: to understand and apply improvements to essay writing • ALL will be able to explain applications of the WMM • MOST will make improvements to their working memory model essay so that it exceeds their target grade • SOME will analyse a mark scheme to produce a ‘recipe for success’ for a LTM essay
Making improvements to our essays... • You are acting upon your target that you have been set for your essay! • Remember the aim is to improve your essay so that it at least on your target grade
LTM: Re-cap • Types of LTM – declarative (episodic, autobiographical, experimental, flashbulb and examples of each) vs non-declarative (procedural) • Case study evidence – Clive Wearing and HM and how they support the existence of different types of LTM • Conway – flashbulb memory, Bower – hierarchical organisation • Interactivity of the memory stores
Interactivity: all of the different types of LTM working together A02 ALERT= Interactivity: although the memory systems are considered largely independent lots of tasks require interaction of the stores • E.g. Playing tennis requires procedural memory (how to play), semantic memory (knowing the rules) and may even involve episodic memory (remembering previous games against this opponent) • TASK: can you think of your own example where all of the different types of memory are being used together?
Planning the LTM essay: re-visiting how to do the recipe for success using a previous example... • It doesn’t have to be complex and it’s not about copying out the mark scheme, it’s about using it as a tool to help you! • E.g. AO1 Up to 5 marks for description with up to 3 marks for definition/description of features ofthe model: a central executive with series of subsystems which are named/described: articulatory loop/articulatory control system/‘inner voice’; primary acoustic/phonological store/‘inner ear’; visuo-spatial sketchpad/scratchpad/‘inner eye’; phonological loop; limited capacity; episodic buffer; limited/short duration/ short term memory. • Credit description of relevant studies up to 2 marks. • Describe 3 parts of model: central exec, phono loop, visuo-spatial sketchpad • Include Logie and Paulesu (1 mark each)
Describe the different types of LTM. Evaluate research methodology used to support the different types (10 marks) • What would our recipe for success look like for this question (an essay question has NEVER been asked on the types of LTM before) • 5 A01 marks: describing the different types of LTM, with examples of each (up to 4 marks), a research study (1 mark) • 5 A02 marks: research evidence to support / go against with evaluation of the research (HM – case study, Bower – longitudinal study, opportunity sample, Bower – lab experiment, lack of ecological validity)
HOMEWORK: due 1 week today • Describe the different types of LTM. Evaluate research methodology used to support the different types (10 marks) • Your recipe for success must be submitted as part of your essay!
