Gaza Palestine Status • Beaches of the Gaza Strip are currently used as a disposal site for solid waste and wastewater. • Around 30 million m3 of raw or partially treated wastewater are annually discharged to the Mediterranean Sea. • Potential risks for these contaminants on marine ecosystems are indeed international significance. • Reduced electricity, fuel, necessary spare parts and other supplies into Gaza as a result of blockade have crippled Palestinian sewage treatment facilities and as results increased pollution of the immediate seawater and coastal zone used for bathing and harvesting shellfish. • Coastal Zone Management is one more important issue for development of the Gaza region.
Value of Coastal Zone Resource • Economic Potential • Tourism: expected to be a major source of future income or revenue • Agriculture: Traditional zone for agricultural production and food supply • Fishery: Fishery sector has a great value for food supply for local people and exports • Social Welfare Potential: • Recreation: Major source of recreation for more than 1.5 million inhabitants
Value of Coastal Zone Resource (Con.) • Scientific Potential • Archaeology: This sector considered as a source of regional and international knowledge of history. • Biological importance: An important ecological resource for Gaza, with variety of both plant and animal life (marine and terrestrial). It also holds the last natural areas in Gaza, such as the wetlands or marshes the wadi Gaza outlet, mobile sand dunes or sand cliffs.
Main Objectives: The main goal of the project is to improve the public and environmental health through: • Providing Authorities with relevant data on seawater and fish/shellfish quality • Developing of human resource capacity • Establishing effective national management plan.
Detailed Objectives: • Outline safety measures to local authorities to ensure safety and attractiveness of beaches as a resort area. • Providing local authorities with data about long-term impact of sewage on sea water quality and fisheries. • Developing human skills of relevant local authorities in conducting studies to achieve goals of the project. • Developing monitoring programs for recreational waters and fish/shellfish waters • Developing appropriate methodologies and analytical procedures to ensure accurate and replicate determinations specific to the region • Providing opportunity for joint regional cooperation and partnership through mobilizing partners from Prize Winners to share the activities Initiation of "Middle East Beach Watch Society- MEBWS”

Project Relevance: • Very helpful in providing local authorities with information on risks and provides data in developing plans and implementing actions • Protect public from danger of being infected by different microbes that are endemic in area • The program clearly magnifies conflicts between development interests and nature • The project activities can be developed and extend to includes other partners from OIC countries. This will give a practical joint regional intervention.
Project Partners • The proposal will be conducted through a group of experts from Palestine, Faculty of Science -IUG • Co-operation of WHO – Gaza Office in connection with WHO Collaborating Centre for Protection of Water Quality and Human Health at the Robens Centre for Public and Environmental Health at the University of Surrey- UK. • Participation of different levels of community (scientists and experts from universities and professional institutions, engineers and technicians from municipalities and others) • The project aims to mobilize other partners from Prize Winners to share the activities
IUG - Utilities • The IUG has a good infrastructure and Scientific Laboratories to carry out the planned activities of the project • The Project activities will be hosted by Environmental and Rural Research Center (ERRC) and Environmental and Earth Science Department (EESD) Faculty of Science,- IDB- Building - Scientific Laboratories
