  2. Constructing Meaning is the Goal of Comprehension in the Content Areas Our students must: • Enhance their understanding • Acquire and use their knowledge • Monitor their understanding • Develop insight

  3. True Comprehension • Goes beyond literal meaning • Students must be involved with the text • extend their thinking • deepen their understanding

  4. Research shows… When teachers teach strategies such as questioning, text structure, synthesizing information, etc., students gain insight as they read for information in the content areas.

  5. Comprehension means that students think not only about what they are reading but about what they are learning

  7. Acquiring Understanding • Go beyond the literal meaning of text • Form new opinions, identify issues, glean new messages • Gain knowledge about the world and ourselves • Develop critical insight to question, interpret, and evaluate

  9. Content refers to what students learn. Process refers to how students learn. Content or Process?

  10. We must teach students • To learn content as they read • To use strategies to understand text and become better readers

  11. Show learners how we think when we read Teach strategies so students can construct meaning from text We model We guide the students in small groups We provide independent time to read, practice and apply the strategies Our responsibility as teachers is to make what is implicit, explicit

  12. The Gradual Release of Responsibility Independence is the ultimate goal for the student: • Teacher modeling • Guided Practice • Independent Practice • Application of the Strategy in Real Life Situations
