The Art of ICT Design for Education • ICT for education does not have to be expensive, new technology has reduced the cost while still maintaining & increasing the value • ICT for education should be designed based on self needs and capabilities • Creativity is the main key factor in finding the best solution • These cases and ideas are developed for developing countries and some have been implemented in Indonesia

Full-scale School Computer Lab • Teachers Qualification • Curriculum development in using ICT for specific local needs • Basic computer operation • Office application (MS or open source) • Experience in online interaction • Special applications (video, graphics, math, programming, etc.) • Moderate computer network maintenance • Assumptions • Applicable for elementary to high school (K1 to K12) • Lab runs continuously (at least 10 hours/day, 6 days/week) without idle time • 1 lab for up to 500 students (ratio of PC against student of 1:12) • 1 class/study group is 40 students • Lab is not only use for computer lessons, but also for other subject applications (e.g. math, chemistry, history, English, etc.) • Stable and continuous electricity supply • Estimated Investment • From Rp 150 million (equal to USD 15,000) Facilities • Computer Lab (LAN) • 40 PC, 1 server, 2 backup PC • 1 network laser printer • 1 network inkjet color printer (optional) • 1 teacher’s laptop w/ DVD ROM (optional) • 1 LCD projector + screen • Legal and/or open source software • Dedicated Internet (min. A VCD Learning Classroom • Teachers Qualification • Teacher with competency on specific fields (e.g. science, history, English, etc.) • Sufficient English skills to understand English learning materials • Facilitating skills in conducting dynamic discussion group • Assumptions • Applicable for elementary to high school (K1 to K12) • Facility runs continuously (at least 6 hours/day, 6 days/week) without idle time • 1 facility for up to 500 students • 1 class/study group is 40 students • Stable and continuous electricity supply • Estimated Investment • From Rp 1.200.000,- (equal to USD 120) plus cost on VCD materials Facilities • 1VCD player w/ microphone (DVD optional) • 1 TV set (from 21 inch screen) • 1 sound system set (optional) • 1 LCD projector + screen (optional) • VCDs on various learning fields (e.g. National Geographics Video Series, Dora The Explorer Series, movies w/ learning insights such as Disney’s Nemo, etc.) • Backup electricity power generator (optional) Methods • A group of students is presented with a 30 minutes or so video presentation (2-4 times per month) • Teacher guides the process, pause the presentation whenever necessary to provide guidance for “lost” students • An open discussion is held after the VCD show • Teacher gives assignment to students related the topic discussed (a real world assignments close to students daily life) • The facility can also be used for a movie show for up to around 50 spectators

Encarta-based Digital Library • Librarian & Teacher Qualification • Teachers with competency on various fields (e.g. science, history, English, etc.) • Librarians and teachers with sufficient English skills to understand English materials • Skills in teaching basic computer operation and using MS Encarta Encyclopedia • Assumptions • Applicable for elementary to high school (K1 to K12) • PCs available continuously (at least 8 hours/day, 6 days/week) without idle time • Library PCs for up to 500 students (ratio of library PC against student of 1:250) • Stable and continuous electricity supply • Estimated Investment • From Rp 5.000.000,- (equal to USD 500) plus cost on CD software package (around USD 40) Facilities • 2 PC with CD ROM (at least Intel Pentium III with MS Windows 98) • 2 sets of PC speakers • 1 shared inkjet color printer • 2 CD packages of MS Encarta Encyclopedia • Internet connection (optional) • Backup electricity power generator (optional) Methods • Teachers from all subjects/fields give assignment to students • The assignments should include the encouragement to use digital library (specifically the MS Encarta Encylopedia) • Students will flock to the library to access and search for information, the librarian has to arrange a schedule to avoid “traffic jam” • Initially, there should be an introduction session when all students are introduced to this facility (a dedicated 1-2 hour training session for each student might be necessary)

School FM Radio • Facilities • Basic FM radio transmitter set • Mini radio studio • Audio library (song, speech, ad jingles, etc.) • Telephone line • Internet connection (optional) • Backup electricity power generator (optional) • Methods • Teachers and students are assigned and scheduled to be on air on daily basis (additional dedicated radio announcer might be needed) • Air time is used for various program strongly related to learning off school hours, e.g. for: • School announcement • Interactive discussion (using phone) for helping parents & students at home to study (teachers can use Internet inside the studio room to answer) • Student-made radio program (anything matched with their interest) • Specially designed education radio/audio program (commonly available from any government education department) • Etc. (creativity is strongly needed to develop program that suits local needs) • Librarian & Teacher Qualification • Teachers with competency on various fields (e.g. science, history, English, etc.) • Basic Internet searching skill • Sufficient English skills to understand English materials (optional) • Assumptions • Applicable for elementary to high school (K1 to K12) • FM radio available continuously (at least 5 hours/day, 7 days/week), air time is off school hours • Stable and continuous electricity supply • Estimated Investment • From Rp 25.000.000,- (equal to USD 2500) for setting up the FM radio transmission and mini studio
