  10. At Milenio we use PBIS… -With PBIS kids learn about behavior, just as they learn other subjects like Math or Language Arts. -The key is prevention, not punishment. -We recognize/reward positive behaviors. (Rewards are not of monetary value, they are more like extra privileges) -Why do we reward for doing what is expected? *Rewards cement good choices into habit. *Do we show up to our jobs for free? -What if it doesn’t work? We use interventions to meet individual behavioral needs.

  11. Our Character Matrix… We promote good character all around our school! Thank you for helping us by reinforcing these words at home!!

  12. Rewards • We are using Class Dojo to keep track of their points earned for each day. • We have also started a clip chart that we use daily to visually see how they are behaving for that day. • Character tickets are given out daily to show TRRFCC choices – if chosen for a reward, they will pick from our class list of rewards.

  13. Math • First Quarter: • Introduction to Multiplication and division • Applying place value, properties and operations to addition and subtraction of multi-digit numbers • Understanding measures of liquid, volume, weight, mass, and time. • Second Quarter: • Develop understanding of multiplication and division • Demonstrating computational fluency in problem solving • Third Quarter: • Extending understanding of multiplication and division • Develop understanding of fractions as numbers • Fourth Quarter: • Collecting and analyzing data • Geometry • Multi-step word problems

Math Mathematical Practices • Make sense of problems and persevere in solving them. • Reason abstractly and quantitatively. • Construct viable arguments and critique the reasoning of others. • Model with mathematics. • Use appropriate tools strategically. • Attend to precision. • Look for and make use of structure. • Look for and express regularity in repeated reasoning.

  18. Reading Third grade is a transition year for reading. We are moving the kids from learning to read to reading to learn. • Expect more complex text than your child has previously read.

  19. Reading • We will be teaching the Arizona College and Career Readiness standards. • We will use several resources including: • Core Knowledge Curriculum • Trade Books

  20. Reading • Our CKLA units this year include Classic Tales, Animal Classifications, Human Body, Ancient Roman Civilization, Light and Sound, Viking Age, Astronomy, Native Americans, European Explorers, Colonial America, and Ecology.

  21. Testing?? • Your child will be tested in Language Arts, Math, and Writing this year. • The test will be in the Spring. • By law, if your child Falls Far Below in reading they will repeat third grade.

  22. What is Move on When Reading? • Arizona State statute requires screening of the reading ability of all students in kindergarten through third grade. • The law, (A.R.S. 15-701) passed in 2010, states that when a third grade student scores far below the third grade level on AzMerit, they will not be promoted to fourth grade. • Requires additional instruction or retention for students who are not meeting minimum requirements by the end of third grade. • Exempt students include: • ELL or LEP students who have received less than two years of English Instruction. • Students with an IEP in Reading or Language and the student’s parent or guardian agrees that promotion is appropriate.

  23. Process and Timeline for Move on When Reading • All students are screened using DIBELS by the end of August. • Parents of students identified for intervention are contacted by their child’s teacher prior to Fall Parent-Teacher conferences. • A parent-teacher conference is requested by the school to create an intervention plan. • Mid-year progress • Students reading progress is closely monitored and check-in points are identified. Interventions are updated as needed. • End of Year • Notification of 3rd grade promotion or retention occurs upon receiving results of AzMerit.

  24. Homework • Assigned every Wednesday and due the following WEDNESDAY. • RED folders: Please check them nightly • Reading Minutes: Please make sure to read • 120 minutes or more a week. • Math Fact Practice: 1st Quarter-addition, 2nd Quarter-subtraction, 3rd Quarter-multiplication, 4th Quarter-division • Writing: There will be weekly writing to help prepare students for AzMerit

  25. Some last bits of information • Temperature in Classroom- encourage your child to bring a sweater or dress in layers. • Gets humid and hot and then freezing cold • Volunteering- please let me know if you are at all interested in helping out this year! • Birthdays-We cannot celebrate in the classroom or have any candy, cookies etc. (Arizona nutritional standards and District policy) • I will send out weekly updates with newsletters on what we did for that week! I will also communicate through Class Dojo for smaller things.
