Learn to accurately measure dimensions using tools like Vernier Caliper and Micrometers in both metric and English systems. Vernier Calipers offer intricate measurements up to 0.001" precision, while Micrometers ensure consistent readings, adjusting for wear. Explore Inside Micrometers, Telescoping Gauge, and Dial Indicators to gauge movements and wear. Enhance your understanding of measuring tools for precise engineering applications.

Chapter 6 Measuring
Objectives • Perform measurements using tools in the chapter • Have a working understanding of the metric and English systems of measurement
Vernier Caliper • Movable scale runs parallel to fixed scale • Can measure inside and outside diameter • Most will measure 0 to 7 inches in thousandths • Can measure depth
Reading Vernier Caliper • Main scale is divided into inches • Each inch is divided into tenths (0.100") • Area between tenth measurement is divided into four segments, each .025"
Micrometers • Precision measuring • Consistent and accurate measurements • Adjusts to compensate for wear
Reading a Micrometer • Metric or standard • Each rotation of thimble is equal to .025" • Four rotations will equal .100" • Each line on the thimble represents .001" • Some will measure to .0001"
Inside Micrometer • Measures cylinder bores and main or rod bearing bores • Extension rods to make them fit different size bores
Telescoping Gauge • Transfer gauge • Different sizes to measure all sizes of bores • Ends of tool telescope is out to make contact with bore • After lock is set • Tool removed from bore and measured with micrometer
Dial Indicators • Measure movements such as back lash and end play • Also used to measure wear, taper, and out-of-round
