Aromatic Compounds • Aromatic hydrocarbons are used as fuels, solvents, dyes, drugs, pesticides, and herbicides. • aromatic compounds because most have strong odours.
There are two types of aromatics • Benzene Attached to a Carbon Chain • a phenyl group (-C6H5). For example: • 2-phenylpentane • those in which other groups are attached to a benzene ring.
Naming • Number the carbons in the benzene ring. If more than one type of branch is attached the ring, start numbering at the carbon with the highest priority (or most complex) group. • Name any branches that are attached to the benzene ring. Give these branches position numbers. If only one branch is attached to a benzene ring, you do not need to include a position ring. • Place the branch numbers and names as a prefix before the root, benzene.
