The Problem of Evil • Write out the Problem of Evil • How is the existence of evil in the world a problem for believing in God? Explain it in your own words. **Do you think you can still believe in an all-loving, all-powerful God in such a world? How? • God is omniscient • - so he knows evil is happening • God is omnipotent • - so he could stop evil • God is omnibenevolent • so he should want to stop evil • BUT…evil still happens…so does this mean that God is not all-knowing/ powerful/ loving? Or does not even exist?
Can you still believe in an all-loving, all-powerful God in a world where evil happens? How? • A theodicy is an argument that tries to explain how there can be evil in the world if God is all-loving, all-good and all-knowing. • Maybe God wants evil for a good purpose… • Explain what a theodicy is. • Explain why we have to have evil as part of having free will • Explain the theodicy of evil as a test. • **Which do you agree/ disagree with more? Why? • Watch the video to find out 2 ways evil might be important for us to have… To 1:15/ 2:56
Match the pictures to the theodicies. Number the theodicies in order from best to worst answer. Stick in your book. Explain why you agree with your no.1 theodicy. Explain what you think is a bad theodicy... Why? *Draw your own pictures for each theodicy Some important people in the Church suggested their own theodicies. Which ones did the video discuss? • St Irenaeus: Evil makes us responsible, as we get to see that we can make choices that have good or evil consequences. Otherwise, we would just be like babies, protected from doing or suffering any evil. • St Augustine - Evil happens because people use free will to do evil. It’s not because God doesn’t care – He just can’t interfere with free will. The evil we suffer, is our fault for choosing evil, not God’s. • Job: evil can’t be explained. God’s ways are too mysterious for us to understand. We should just be silent in awe and respect of the way God made the world to be. • Hick: the existence of evil gives us the chance to choose the good freely, out of choice. So it helps us to become better people freely. • St. Aquinas: There really isn’t any evil – it only seems to be that way– evil is only the absence of good. The problem should really be “why isn’t there more good in the world?”
