  7. Ανώμαλα (Anomala) There is a wide variety of Greek desserts, ranging from pastries to preserves. This particular dessert is called Anomala, it is chocolate colored Almonds. This candy is one of the Greek favorites, it can be found in nearly every candy shop and bakery. Greek Dessert Return to Exhibit

  8. Greek Language The Greek language has been around for a long time. It’s still being used today, even though it’s been around for nearly 3000 years! The Greek Alphabet was the first to include vowels. Imagine what our language would be like without vowels! The written language goes from right to left usually.   9. Greek Religion The major religion in Greece is Greek Orthodox. About 98% of the population identifies as Greek Orthodox. The other two percent is taken up by a variety of religions such as Catholicism, Judaism, Protestant, and several others. Greece is one of two countries to have such a large number of Greek Orthodox. The other country is Russia. The Orthodox Church say that it originated in 49 AD when St. Paul came to Greece.   10. Greek Traditions Greek traditions can be very contrasting. The two sources of the traditions are opposing, paganism or from religious figures. However, most traditions still practiced today are of a more religious nature. Baptism is one such religious tradition. The child is usually baptized when he or she is one year of age. The child receives his or her name at this ceremony. So many children go through their first year of life with no name. Baptism is a very detailed ritual. The child wears nothing at all, as is completely immersed three times into the water, while the child’s name is said. The water is blessed by the priest and olive oil is added to it prior to the baptism. After, the baby wears white clothing and a gold cross. Communion is then served to the child for the very first time. The godparents play an important part in this ceremony. It is a large celebration. Greek traditions Return to Exhibit
