  15. Network Bandwidth (1) • The Problem: With NZ network traffic charges, hosting a PlanetLab node can become prohibitive. • The Solution: KAREN! • The New Problem: is KAREN coverage sufficient?

  17. Booting a PlanetLab Node • Boot CD stays in machine at all times. (Nodes can’t actually boot off the hard disk!) • On boot: • Download scripts, configuration data, slice information from PLCC. • Maybe reformat disk and reinstall OS.

  18. Administering a PlanetLab Node • How do you administer a PlanetLab node? • You can’t! • You don’t know root password! (Although you do have site_admin.) • PLCC control everything. • PCU (Power Control Unit) required. • Widely distributed network coupled with very tightly centralized control!

  19. Life with PlanetLab • PlanetLab nodes come and go without warning. • Nodes reboot (and maybe reinstall!) without warning. • Therefore: checkpoints! • Therefore: download data!
