  5. Return of a Superpower • In 1931, the president of the IOC awarded Berlin, Germany as the host nation for the 1936 Olympics • This was Germany’s return after WWI • In 1933, Hitler became Chancellor of Germany • The German democracy was then turned into a dictatorship

Nazi Racism • America considered boycotting the 1936 Berlin Olympics • The IOC emphasized racism would not be an issue • Many Americans believed African American success would lead to less racism in America and the Aryan creed would be diminished • African American track stars, including Jesse Owens wanted to compete in order to squash the Nazi theories

Racism in Berlin & beyond • 3 times the number of African American athletes competed in Berlin compared to LA just four years prior • African Americans were still segregated in America as well as abroad • 18 African Americans competed in Berlin • 16 men, 2 women • 14 medals were won by African American competitors in Berlin
