  2. About Virus What is the disease: The swine flu is a new influenza virus causing illness in people. This new virus was first detected in people in the United States in April 2009. Study has shown that this new virus is very different from what normally circulates in North American pigs, it has two genes from flu viruses that normally circulate in pigs in Europe and Asia and bird genes and human genes. aPicture’of virus

  3. Transmitting Virus Spread of the Swine Flu virus is thought to occur in the same way that seasonal flu spreads. Flu viruses are spread mainly from person to person through coughing or sneezing by people with influenza. Sometimes people may become infected by touching something – such as a surface or object – with flu viruses on it and then touching their mouth or nose.

  4. Virus Symptoms! The symptoms of the Swine Flu virus in people include fever, cough, sore throat, runny or stuffy nose, body aches, headache, chills and fatigue. Some people may have vomiting and diarrhea. People may be infected with the flu, including Swine Flu and have respiratory symptoms without a fever. Severe illnesses and deaths have occurred as a result of illness associated with this virus.

  5. Treatment There are drugs your doctor may prescribe for treating both seasonal and swine flu. CDC recommends that people with swine flu avoid contact with others as much as possible.

  6. History of Virus On June 11, 2009, the World Heath organization that signaled that a global pandemic of influenza (swine flu) was underway by raising the worldwide pandemic alert level to P This action was a reflection of the spread of the new swine flu virus, not the severity of illness caused by the virus. At the time, more than 70 countries had reported cases of novel influenza (swine flu) infection and there were ongoing community level outbreaks of swine flu in multiple parts of the world.

  7. Prevent Virus A flu vaccine is the first and most important step in protecting against flu infection. • Wash your hands often with soap and water. If soap and water are not available, use an alcohol-based hand rub. • Avoid touching your eyes, nose or mouth. Germs spread this way. • Try to avoid close contact with sick people • If you are sick with flu-like illness, CDC recommends that you stay home for at least 24 hours after your fever is gone except to get medical care or for other necessities. (Your fever should be gone without the use of a fever-reducing medicine.) Keep away from others as much as possible to keep from making others sick.
