  3. Kingdom of God • 17 From that time Jesus began to preach, saying, "Repent, for the kingdom of heaven is at hand." (Matt. 4:17 ESV) • 14 Now after John was arrested, Jesus came into Galilee, proclaiming the gospel of God, 15 and saying, "The time is fulfilled, and the kingdom of God is at hand; repent and believe in the gospel." (Mk. 1:14-15 ESV)

  7. How do we seek first God’s kingdom and his righteousness?

Context (Matthew 6:19-34) • 6:19-21 Jesus challenges his listeners to lay up treasures in heaven. • 19 "Do not lay up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moth and rust destroy and where thieves break in and steal, 20but lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust destroys and where thieves do not break in and steal. 21 For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also. (Matt. 6:19-21 ESV)

  9. Context (Matthew 6:19-34) • 6:22-23 Jesus challenges the listeners to see beyond the physical world if they wants to lay up treasures in heaven. • 22 "The eye is the lamp of the body. So, if your eye is healthy, your whole body will be full of light, 23 but if your eye is bad, your whole body will be full of darkness. If then the light in you is darkness, how great is the darkness! (Matt. 6:22-23 ESV)

  14. Those who seek first the Kingdom of God must settle the loyalty issue: Who is your Master?

Context (Matthew 6:19-34) • 6:25-34 Jesus challenges the listeners not to worry about tomorrow physical needs if they want to lay up treasure in heaven. • 25 "Therefore I tell you, do not be anxious about your life, what you will eat or what you will drink, nor about your body, what you will put on. Is not life more than food, and the body more than clothing? (Matt. 6:25 ESV) • 27 And which of you by being anxious can add a single hour to his span of life? (Matt. 6:27 ESV)

Consider the lilies of the field, how they grow: they neither toil nor spin, 29 yet I tell you, even Solomon in all his glory was not arrayed like one of these. 30But if God so clothes the grass of the field, which today is alive and tomorrow is thrown into the oven, will he not much more clothe you, O you of little faith? (Matt. 6:28-30 ESV)

Context (Matthew 6:19-34) • 6:25-34 Jesus gives two reasons for the listeners not to worry about tomorrow if they want to lay up treasure in heaven. • Second, Your Father in heaven knows that you need them all. • 31 Therefore do not be anxious, saying, 'What shall we eat?' or 'What shall we drink?' or 'What shall we wear?' 32 For the Gentiles seek after all these things, and your heavenly Father knows that you need them all. (Matt. 6:31-32 ESV)

Seek First the kingdom of God • Since anxiety will not preserve your life (6:25,27,34), • Since in your heavenly Father’s eyes, you are more precious than birds and lilies (6:26, 28-30); • Since your heavenly Fathers knows that you need food and clothing (6:31-32), • So, instead of using up your emotional and physical worrying about your future needs, use your emotional and physical energy to seek first the kingdom of God and his righteousness.

  21. Seek First the kingdom of God • 33 But seek first the kingdom of God and his righteousness, and all these things will be added to you. (Matt. 6:33 ESV) • 20 but lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust destroys and where thieves do not break in and steal. 21For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also. (Matt. 6:20-21 ESV)

What does the Kingdom of God mean? • The Kingdom of God means His kingship, His reign, His authority • 19 The LORD has established his throne in the heavens, and his kingdom (kingship) rules over all. (Ps. 103:19 ESV) • 14 But when Jesus saw it, he was indignant and said to them, "Let the children come to me; do not hinder them, for to such belongs the kingdom of God. 15 Truly, I say to you, whoever does not receive the kingdom (kingship) of God like a child shall not enter it." (Mk. 10:14-15 ESV)

  23. Kingdom of God (Kingship of God) • 17 From that time Jesus began to preach, saying, "Repent, for the kingdom (kingship) of heaven is at hand." Jesus is the King of the Kingdom of God 32 This Jesus God raised up, and of that we all are witnesses. 33Being therefore exalted at the right hand of God, and having received from the Father the promise of the Holy Spirit, he has poured out this that you yourselves are seeing and hearing. 34 For David did not ascend into the heavens, but he himself says, "'The Lord said to my Lord, "Sit at my right hand, 35 until I make your enemies your footstool."'(Acts 2:32-35 ESV)

Jesus is the King of the Kingdom of God 24 Then comes the end, when he (Christ Jesus) delivers the kingdom to God the Father after destroying every rule and every authority and power. 25 For he (Christ Jesus) must reign until he (God) has put all his (Christ Jesus’) enemies under his (Christ Jesus’) feet. … 28 When all things are subjected to him (Christ Jesus), then the Son (Christ Jesus) himself will also be subjected to him (God) who put all things in subjection under him (Christ Jesus), that God may be all in all. (1 Cor. 15:24-28 ESV)

What does God’s righteousness mean? • God’s righteousness means God’s righteous way in ruling this world. • 7 But the LORD sits enthroned forever; he has established his throne for justice, 8 and he judges the world with righteousness; he judges the peoples with uprightness. (Ps. 9:7-8 ESV) • 1 The LORD reigns, let the earth rejoice; let the many coastlands be glad! 2 Clouds and thick darkness are all around him; righteousness and justice are the foundation of his throne. (Ps. 97:1-2 ESV)

  27. How do we seek God’s kingdom and his righteousness? • Connect Yourself to Jesus: Seek God’s Reign over your life. • It begins with receiving Jesus as your Saving King. • It continues through the rest of your life until you died or until the Saving King returns. • Is God’s reign increasing in your life? • Are you obeying your King more and more each day? • Are you loving your King him more and more each day? • Are you seeking to do your King’s will for your life more and more each day?

  28. Despite our imperfection, Jesus desires your heart to beat as one with his heart. Connecting Yourself to Jesus

  29. Intimacy is before ministry for ministry can never replace intimacy. Intimacy with Jesus

How do we seek God’s kingdom and his righteousness? • Connect one another to Jesus: Seek God’s Reign together. • By loving one another as Jesus has loved us. • By encouraging one another to submit to God’s reign over our lives. • By admonishing one another to submit to God’s reign over our lives. • By showing mercy and grace to those who fail to submit God’s reign over their lives. • By maintaining and strengthening unity to submit to God’s reign over our lives.

  31. The Mission has a Church (one another in Christ) Mission precedes the church. Mission is first of all God’s: God inside out in the world through the Spirit, God in Jesus teaching, healing, including, suffering. Almost incredibly–as an act of grace!–God shares that mission with women and men. Mission calls the church into being to serve God’s purposes in the world. The church does not have a mission, but the mission has a church. (Stephen Bevans)

  32. The primary focus of the Church is relationship, not mission, connecting one another to Jesus. Connecting one another to Jesus grows a missional church.

  33. Connecting Yourself to Jesus and connecting one another to Jesus prepares us to share in God’s mission. God’s mission is connecting the world to Jesus.

  34. How do we seek God’s kingdom and his righteousness? • Connect the World to Jesus: Seek to be God’s ambassadors to the World (cf. 2Co 5:18-21). • At all times and in all places, in words and deeds, be the best that you can in representing God’s reign to the world. • Demonstrate God’s loving reign by words and deeds. • Work with other likeminded disciples in connecting the World to God’s reign (cf. Luke 9:49-50).

  35. The World cannot see Jesus but they can see you, an intimate friend of Jesus. Connecting yourself to Jesus grows intimacy with Jesus.

  36. The World cannot see Jesus but they can see the Body of Jesus, the Church. Connecting one another to Jesus grows intimacy with Jesus.

  37. How do we seek God’s kingdom and his righteousness? • Connect Yourself to Jesus: Seek God’s Reign over your life. • Connect One Another to Jesus: Seek God’s Reign together. • Connect the World to Jesus: Seek to be God’s ambassadors to the World (cf. 2Co 5:18-21).
