  2. Mission • The mission of the library program is to insure that students and staff are effective users of ideas and information. This mission is accomplished: • by providing intellectual and physical access to materials in all formats, • by providing instruction to foster competence and stimulate interest in reading, viewing, and using information and ideas, and • by collaborating with other educators to design learning strategies to meet the needs of individual students.

  3. Background • Motivation behind the interdisciplinary approach to literacy in the Standards: • Extensive research establishes the need for college and career ready students to be proficient in reading complex informational text independently in a variety of content areas. • Student driven inquiry/research is key to learning

  4. Collaboration: What does it look like? Working together: • Planning Research – assignments should have at least 3 sources and 3 subtopics • Selecting supplemental resources for reading/analysis • Book talks • Purchase of materials: more e-resources and print

Per the Common Core State Standards The standards identify what it means to be a literate person in the 21st century. • Students learn to closely and attentively read and analyze critical works of literature and an array of nonfiction text in an exploding print and digital world. • They use research and technology to sift through the staggering amount of information available and engage in collaborative conversations, sharing and reforming viewpoints through a variety of written and speaking applications.

  6. Lexile Gap • We need to help our students to become more advanced in their reading lexile levels. • According to the NAEP, there is a significant gap in high school graduates’ reading abilities with what’s needed in careers and college. • The difference is about 350 lexile points. That’s the same difference between what a 4th grader and an 8th grader’s lexile should be! • To meet Common Core Standards, grades 6-8 should read at a 995-1115 lexile level

  7. How to increase reading levels • Teachers demand rigorous and complex tasks for the work asked • Appropriate for their learning objectives • Scaffold the learning and reading skills needed • Students need to read and perform independently

  11. Prevent Plagiarism • Over 60% of students copy their work! Per Josephson Institute of Ethics 2010 report • The more online tools college students were allowed to use to complete an assignment, the more likely they were to copy the work of others. Per a recent study by Jeffrey A. Roberts and David M. Wasieleski at Duquesne University

  12. Why do we care? • Plagiarism is against the law. In the work force, people have been fined or sued • Students don’t learn • We want to promote fairness and character • We want our future professionals to know their craft

  13. So what’s a Teacher to do? • Inform your students re: Academic Integrity Policy. Most follow rules, but need to know there is one. 18% less cheating with policy. • Restrict sources so teacher will recognize the print/electronic material • Check for mismatched font, style, and level of ability (assign in-class writing assignment as a gauge) • Look for outdated sources, British expressions • BUT… 75% of Web is not searchable – some pdf, e-mail, blogs, etc.

  14. Preventative Methods… • Instructional design is key! Create an interesting project that requires higher levels of thinking • Instruct students on citing sources and the importance of ethics. Free help with easybib.com, Gale Database, etc. • Require a proposal, thesis, outline, first draft, and final draft, forces students to show their work

  15. And Finally… As a staff, we want to help students to: • connect, • wonder, • investigate, • construct, • express, and • reflect as part of the inquiry process
