Florida’s Water Management Districts Pre Conference Seminar
Florida’s Water Management Districts • Created by the Florida Legislature through passage of the Water Resources Act of 1972 • Four main areas of responsibility: • Water Supply • Flood Protection • Water Quality Management • Natural Systems Protection Pre Conference Seminar
Arc Hydro in Florida • 2002 – Arc Hydro: GIS for Water Resources Workshop at University of Florida • 2005 – ArcHydro in Florida: Core Principles and Collaboration at University of Florida • Goal: Identify “core principles” behind application of GIS tools and techniques to water resources in the State of Florida • Core principles include data processing tools, data formats, and data sharing • Formed Florida Arc Hydro Working Group (FAHWG) Pre Conference Seminar
Florida Arc Hydro Working Group (FAHWG) • Florida WMDs, State of Florida Department of Environmental Protection, various county and local government agencies and private business interests • Objectives: • Develop a statewide common collection of core datasets to support each stakeholder’s requirements and enable data exchange • Identify common core fields maintained within these core datasets • Identify data maintenance methodology for support of these core datasets Pre Conference Seminar
Proposed Statewide Arc Hydro Database Design • Issues • Each WMD Arc Hydro implementation based on different requirements and use of the data • Each WMD has various internal requirements, such as database naming conventions • Modifications to any of the existing WMD implementations will be resource intensive • Decision • Develop a standard statewide database design • Establish procedures for data exchange (to and from), based on WMD previously existing design • Benefits • Creates a unified Arc Hydro compliant database for the State of Florida • Provides Statewide data exchange • Meets the requirements as identified by the FAHWG Pre Conference Seminar
Establishing Data Exchange Procedures • XML based approach will be the methodology of choice • Advantages: • Facilitating sharing across multiple systems • Robust, logically verified format based on international standards • Self-documenting • Platform independent Pre Conference Seminar
Florida Arc Hydro Users Group (FLAHUG) • Charter drafted • Website created www.flahug.org • FLARCHYDRO Listserv established (last count 161 members) • Survey completed • To help guide development of the organization and understand needs of Arc Hydro users statewide • Results summarized on website • Promoting FLAHUG at GIS conferences • Next Steps • Acceptance of database design • Establishment of data exchange procedures Steering Committee Pre Conference Seminar
