CovalentCompounds Unit 6: Nomenclature - Part II Mrs. Callender
Lesson Essential Questions: How do I write a formula for a covalentcompound? How do I name a covalent compound?
Ex. P2O5 Writing Names of BinaryMolecularCompounds penta oxide phosphorus di 1. BM compounds use prefixes in their name. These are determined by the subscripts in the formula. You know it is a BinaryMolecularCompound because it contains twoelements and both are nonmetals. 2. Write the name of the first element after the prefix. 1 – mono 2 – di 3 – tri 4 – tetra 5 – penta 6 – hexa 7 – hepta 8 – octa 9 – nona 10 - deca 3. Write the prefix of the second element. 4. Write the name of the second element changing the ending to –ide.
Ex. S2O10 Writing Names of BinaryMolecularCompounds deca oxide sulfur di 1. BM compounds use prefixes in their name. These are determined by the subscripts in the formula.
