  5. IDAHO SUICIDE FACTS • Suicide is the 2nd leading cause of death for Idahoans ages 15-34 and for males ages 10-14 (accidents are #1) • Idaho is consistently among the states with the highest suicide rates. In 2010 (the most recent year available) Idaho had the 6th highest suicide rate, 49% higher than the national average. • Between 2008 -2012, 79% of Idaho suicides were by men. • It is estimated that suicide attempts in Idaho result in $36 million annually. (#4)

  7. SUICIDE FACTS cont. • There are 4 male suicides for every female suicide (CDC,AAS) • There are three female suicide attempts for each male attempt. • Most teens say that they did it because they were trying to escape from a situation that seemed impossible to deal with or to get relief from really bad thoughts or feelings.

  8. Specific things teens are trying to escape from… • feelings of rejection, hurt, loss • anger, ashamed, or guilty about something • worried about disappointing friends or family members • may feel unwanted, unloved, victimized, or like they're a burden to others • *When our emotional needs are significantly out of balance we start to engage in self-destructive behaviors.

  9. Common Misconceptions “People who talk about suicide won’t really do it.” NOT TRUE – Almost everyone who commits or attempts suicide has given some clue or warning. Do not ignore threats! “Talking about suicide may give someone the idea.” NOT TRUE – You don’t give a suicidal person ideas by talking about suicide. The opposite is true—bringing up the subject and discussing it openly is one of the most helpful things you can do. “If a person is determined to kill him/herself, nothing is going to stop them.” NOT TRUE- Even the most severely depressed person has mixed feelings about death, and most waiver until the very last moment between wanting to live and wanting to end their pain. Most suicidal people don’t want to die; they want the pain to stop.

  10. Risk Factors (# 6) • Mental disorders, especially depression • Previous suicide attempt • Family history of mental illness • Serious medical condition and/or pain • Traumatic life event • Research has consistently shown a strong link between suicide and depression. Ninety percent of the people who die by suicide have an existing mental illness or substance abuse problem at the time of their death.
