Ranks of the British Armed Forces • The Combined Cadet Force is linked to all three of the British Armed Forces – the Army, the RAF and the Navy. • During a cadet’s time in their Section, they are likely to encounter personnel from all of these services, whether it be on an exercise, on a course or camp or simply at school. • Therefore, it is important that cadets are familiar with the ranks of each service.
Important Notes The CCF (RAF) rankJunior Corporaldoes not exist in the RAF. It isused in order to create an equivalentrankwith the ArmySection’sLance Corporalrank. The highestrank of a Combined Cadet Force officerisWing Commander, Commander and Lieutenant Colonel for RAF, Navy and Army Sections respectively. The highestofficerrank of each respective Service, e.g. Marshal of the Royal Air Force, etc. isnowonlyused in wartime or as an honorarytitle for members of the Royal Family or othervery senior or distinguishedofficers. It isawardedat the discretion of the monarch.
Non-Commissioned Ranks Aircraftman, AC Leading Aircraftman, LAC Senior Aircraftman, SAC Junior Technician, Jnr Tech These ranks all equate to the rank of Private in the Army and Ordinary Rate and Able Rate in the Navy. Different regiments/corps of the Army may use other names instead of Private.Just a few examples are: Gunner – Royal Artillery Guardsman – Foot Guards Rifleman – Rifle Regiments Sapper – Royal Engineers
