Today’s Agenda • Warm Up • Answers to homework • Notes on Formulas and Functions QUIZ Tomorrow
1.4 – Formulas & Functions What’s a Formula? - a bunch of numbers and letters, right? - nah! - A formula is an algebraic equation that relates two or more real-life quantities Here’s some examples of formulas: A=lw d = rt V=lwh I=Prt
Let’s look at the Rectangle Area Formula A = lw Suppose we want to use the Area formula to find length for a bunch of Rectangles. It would make sense to change the problem so that we have length equals the other stuff. So let’s solve the area formula for l.
To isolate l we need to divide both sides of the equation by w. A = lw w w or Now we can use this equation to calculate the length of a rectangle if we are given the Area and width
Solve the equation 5x + y = 8 for y Move every thing except y to the right side of the equation. 5x + y = 8 -5x -5x y = - 5x + 8
Exploring Methods: Find the value of y for the given value of x using two methods. Method 1: Substitute the value of x into the equation and then solve for y.
Method 2: Solve for y and then substitute the value of x into the equation.
