  1. Tools To Make MathLessons Interactive Designed by Jessica Chase Created for Foundations of American Education and Educational Psychology Fall 2011 Grad Project

  2. The following ideas are ways to incorporate everyday items, fun ideas, acronyms and body motions into teaching math. Math can be interactive, 3D and engaging. Let’s get and KEEP our students’ attention!

  3. Use Crafts • When teaching the Pythagorean Theorem use ribbon or string to demonstrate the side lengths and shape of the triangle. • Use buttons or other crafty items to demonstrate commutative properties of addition and multiplication.

  4. Use Body Movements • Use arm motions to help students see and remember graph shapes and equations. • Walk though number lines and rise and run of graphing. • Make your students human examples so that they can see the math in front of them.

  5. Use Acronyms • Sine, Cosine and Tangent: • Silly Old Hitler: Sine = Opposite/Hypotenuse • Caused Awful Headaches: Cosine = Adjacent/ Hypotenuse • To Our Airmen: Tangent = Opposite/Adjacent • Order of Operations: • PEMDAS: Please excuse my dear aunt Sally: Parenthesis, exponents, multiplication, division, addition, subtraction.

  6. Be Different • Use music and songs to relate math to the student’s lives. • Be expressive and excited about math when teaching. • Enthusiasm is contagious! • Be a teacher that stands out and students want to learn from. • Be inviting, approachable and helpful.

  7. Remember, math can be a daunting subject for many students. Relating math to their lives and making it interactive and fun can help students get over their fears of learning new mathematical concepts. Be that teacher you wish you had! Be excited to teach math and make students excited to learn it.
