  1. Benchmark Review

  2. Please USE Your Science Strategies

  3. Circle key words and write above their definition. Increase—get bigger Decrease—get smaller • Identify the variables in pictures!!!! Check the items that are alike and circle the items that are DIFFERENT. (the variable) • Always read directions above pictures!!! TWICE!!! • Lastly, -describe why you chose your answer!

  4. NOW LETS REVIEW

  5. Ecosystems

  6. Population • Individuals of the same kind living in the same environment – more than one of the same kind of animal • Example: a herd of zebras

  7. Community • All the populations of organisms living together in an environment • Example: herd of zebras, or a group of gorillas

  8. Niche • The certain role a population has in its habitat – it’s occupation or job • Example: Both the owl and eagle hunt mice, they have different niches – the eagle hunts during the day, the owl at night • What do we call hunters like this? PREDATORS

  9. Adaptations • An adaptation is something an organism has or does that helps it survive in its environment. • For instance, an artic fox has white fur to camouflage itself, small ears to conserve heat and thick hair. • Talons help a hawk catch a mouse. • Feathers help keep birds warm and help them fly. • Hollow bones make a bird especially light for flying.

  10. Plants also have adaptations….. • Rose bushes have thorns to help protect them from plant-eating animals. • Tendrils on a vine attach to a tree to help a vine reach sunlight. • Needles on an evergreen tree are covered in sap and are thin to help the tree conserve water.

  11. Food Chains and Food Webs • Remember, the arrow is pointing to the organism that is doing the eating. • Example: -------> -------> This means that grass is eaten BY the mouse and the mouse is eaten BY the snake!

  12. Don’t Forget……. • Plants are PRODUCERS because they make their own food. (This process, making their own food, takes place inside the plant’s leaves. We call this… PHOTOSYNTHESIS!!!) • An animal gets food and energy by eating other organisms---this is called a CONSUMER.

  13. Types of Consumers: • Herbivores- only eat plants Grasshoppers, rabbits, & cows • Carnivores- only eat meat snakes, eagles, & wolves • Omnivores- eat both plants & meat humans, raccoons

  14. Behaviors Learned behavior-the organism learns from its parents how to do something. EX: Lions learn hunting skills from other lions. Animals learn to come closer when food is around---this is also a learned behavior. • Adaptive behavior- Such as, a beaver building a dam for shelter or humans building a home.

  15. METAMORPHOSIS • Can you name an animal that goes through metamorphosis?

  16. Metamorphosis A change in the shape or characteristics of an organism’s body as it grows

  17. Gymnosperms Have seeds in a cone that are unprotected

  18. Angiosperm Have monocot or dicot seeds, flowers, and the seeds are protected in fruit

  19. GOOD LUCK!!!
