What is PAVE? PAVE is a strategy that allows you to predict, associate, verify, and evaluate unfamiliar words. Objectives: You will use your background knowledge and context clues to predict words and make associations You will use the dictionary to verify and evaluate meaning Finally, you will create a chart to help you understand and retain these new words.
Part I • Night Vocabulary List One Handout • Review the directions • Read aloud each word and word in context • Whole Class - Complete #1
Whole Class Example #1 Word: billeted Word in Context: The officers were billeted in private homes, even in Jewish homes. Your Predicted Definition: housed Your Original sentence: The campers were housed in tents.
Dictionary Definition: Noun: A nonmilitary facility, where soldiers are lodged temporarily. A thick piece of wood. Verb: Lodge (soldiers) in a particular place, esp. a civilian's house or other nonmilitary facility. Your Better Sentence: During the attacks, the soldiers were billeted at our local community center.
