Career Evaluation The fundraising professional plays a significant role in the operation of healthy, viable nonprofits which can face the challenges of this decade and century. It requires the use of skills, abilities and personal traits that match various roles and responsibilities of the fundraising professional. Are you solely a planned giving professional, major gifts or are you more? Should you stay where you are or should you look around?
Career Evaluation • Review your resume or look back on your career: • How long have you been in your current position? • Have you moved up or across? • Do you need to learn about another aspect of Development? • Where have you excelled the most or what have you enjoyed doing the most? • What are some examples of success that you can point to?

(Particularly for senior level positions.) Can they provide references other than supervisors, i.e. donors, senior level volunteers? How are their relationship building skills? Do they have a passion for our mission?
What Should You Look For in an Organization A mission you can truly commit yourself to, and get excited about. An organization-wide, top-to-bottom staff and volunteer commitment to the fundraising function. Realistic expectations vs. “we need it now” strategy. A good sense of where the organization sees itself today, and where it wants to be in 5 years. Senior volunteer and staff leadership commitment in keeping with the mission.
What Should You Look For in an Organization Where to look: Visit the site and review materials. Discuss fundraising goals. Determine if they are realistic, based on current activity. Ask to meet or talk with Board Members, or at least learn about them. Ask to meet with support staff and colleagues. What is the corporate culture? Are people busy yet seemingly content? Is there indication of meaningful activity? Ask to see a list of prospects and donors. Check and recheck the job expectations.
