  1. Mateo14:13 - 21 13 En aquel tiempo, al enterarse Jesús de la muerte de Juan el Bautista, subió a una barca y se dirigió a un lugar apartado y solitario. Al saberlo la gente, lo siguió por tierra desde los pueblos. 14 Cuando Jesús desembarcó, vio aquella muchedumbre, se compadeció de ella y curó a los enfermos.

  2. 15 Como ya se hacía tarde, se acercaron sus discípulos a decirle: “Estamos en despoblado y empieza a oscurecer. Despide a la gente para que vayan a los caseríos y compren algo de comer.” 16 Pero Jesús les replicó: “No hace falta que vayan. Denles ustedes de comer”. 17 Ellos le contestaron: “No tenemos aquí más que cinco panes y dos pescados”. 18 Él les dijo: “Tráiganmelos”.

  3. 19 Luego mandó que la gente se sentara sobre el pasto. Tomó los cinco panes y los dos pescados, y mirando al cielo, pronunció una bendición, partió los panes y se los dio a los discípulos para que los distribuyeran a la gente. 20 Todos comieron hasta saciarse y con los pedazos que habían sobrado, se llenaron doce canastos. 21 Los que comieron eran unos cinco mil hombres, sin contar a las mujeres y a los niños.

  5. Matthew14:13 - 21 13 When Jesus heard of the death of John the Baptist, he withdrew in a boat to a deserted place by himself. The crowds heard of this and followed him on foot from their towns. 14 When he disembarked and saw the vast crowd, his heart was moved with pity for them, and he cured their sick.

  6. 15 When it was evening, the disciples approached him and said, “This is a deserted place and it is already late; dismiss the crowds so that they can go to the villages and buy food for themselves.” 16 Jesus said to them, “There is no need for them to go away; give them some food yourselves.” 17 But they said to him, “Five loaves and two fish are all we have here.” 18 Then he said, “Bring them here to me,”

  7. 19 and he ordered the crowds to sit down on the grass. Taking the five loaves and the two fish, and looking up to heaven, he said the blessing, broke the loaves, and gave them to the disciples, who in turn gave them to the crowds. 20 They all ate and were satisfied, and they picked up the fragments left over -- twelve wicker baskets full. 21 Those who ate were about five thousand men, not counting women and children.

July 31, 2011 Today the Lord fulfills the first reading: Isaiah 55, which promises that those who are thirsty, and hungry will eat well and shall delight in rich fare. Psalm 145 points out that it is the Lord that feeds us. He opens his hand to feed us in due time, he satisfies the desire of every living thing. And in Romans 8 St. Paul reassures us: “Nothing can separate us from the love of God in Christ Jesus.

  11. Chrysostom (in Gospel of Matthew, 49),notes thatMatthew 14:13 tells us Jesus withdrew in a boat to a deserted place by himself when he heard of the death of John the Baptist, his cousin. He did not withdraw from fear but because he did not want to make his identity known at this time.

  13. The crowds heard of this and followed him on foot. (From the top of a hill on the edge of Lake Galilee you can see boats and see where they are going. Boats are sort of slow, so by the time Jesus disembarks, the crowds are already there waiting). They are already “riveted to Jesus,” nothing can separate them from Jesus, not even the tragic death of John the Baptist. The followers of John the Baptist had informed the crowd of his death, but from now on they followed Jesus.

  15. Jerome in (Commentary on Matthew 2:14-13) says Jesus withdrew to avoid his persecutors, and not because of fear. Thus he gave us an example of avoiding the foolhardiness of those who betrayed him. In another text, He said: “When they persecute you in one town, flee to another” (Mark 6:52). His plan was to die on Passover, the day on which a lamb was ritually offered and doorposts of the faithful were sprinkled with his blood.

  17. Then Jesus proceeds to give his disciples a lesson. When He sees the people are hungry, he has compassion for them, and tells the disciples to give them something to eat. “They did not understand what he was saying, because their hearts were hardened” (Mark 6:52). Chrysostom (Op. cit.) observes, “They were continuing to crawl like babies.”

  19. Cyril of Alexandria (Fragment 175) notes the Apostles were actually looking out for the people, when they suggested they be sent away. But Jesus had other plans. His compassion was already manifested when he healed their sick. Now his compassion was to be manifested in a new way.

  21. Hilary of Poitiers (On Matthew 14:10) reflects that the five loaves were types of the five books of the law that had fed them up to that time. And the two fish were types of the prophets and John. For in the works of the law there was life just as there is life from bread, but the preaching of John and the prophets restored hope to human life by virtue of the water of baptism. The apostles offered these things first, because that was their level of understanding. From these modest beginnings, the apostles grew to preach the gospel of Jesus with its immense power.

  23. Chrysostom, (The Gospel of Matthew 49:1), notes that in the Gospel of John (John 6:9), it is further related that these were loaves of barley. This was the bread of the poor. This is not mentioned accidentally, but with the object of trampling under foot (as barley is crushed) the pride of costly living. Such was also the diet of the prophets.

  25. Jerome (Commentary on Matthew 2:14-19) says, they reclined in groups of hundreds and fifties. This number symbolized repentance, in reference to the Hebrew jubilee year, which recurred every fifty years and during which all debts were remitted. Jesus taught them to look up to heaven to keep their focus there.

He did this by choice of location, by providing nothing more than loaves and fish, by setting the same food before all and having them share it in common.

  29. Isn’t it interesting that they were all satisfied? And God so multiplies that there is always enough to have leftovers. Which indicates that God gives without measure (John 3:34). Further, God does not waste anything. Jesus orders the leftovers to be picked up.

  31. If he did it once, Jesus can do it again. “Jesus is the same yesterday, today, and forever” (Hebrews 13:8). He gives us Bread from heaven at every Mass. We have plenty to eat everyday. He gives us enough to share, and then some. And he multiplies so that there is always enough. Mother Teresa once said: “If there are poor people, it is because someone has not loved them.” It is not that God has not provided.It is up to us to be generous with what the Lord gives us, and share with those who are in need.

  32. Si lo hizo una vez, Jesús lo puede hacerlo otra vez. Porque “Jesucristo es el mismo ayer, ahora, y para siempre” (Hebreos 13:8). Él nos da Pan celestial en cada Misa. Nos da bastante que comer todos los días. Y siempre nos da bastante para compartir, y hasta para sobrar. La Madre Teresa una vez dijo: “Si hay pobres es porque alguien no los amo.” No es porque Dios no nos da lo suficiente. Nos toca a nosotros ser generosos con lo que Dios nos da, y compartir con los necesitados.

  33. In El Paso, Texas, there was a Jesuit priest named Father Richard Thomas. He and his community witnessed numerous multiplication miracles. One day the Lord multiplied a ham-bone when Father Thomas and his community went to give food to the poor at the Juarez (Mexico), City dump. Everybody ate till they were satisfied, and then there was still some leftover.

Una vez se multiplico el jamón cuando fueron a darles de comer a los pobres del tiradero de Cd. Juárez, Mexico. Muchos comieron hasta saciarse, y todavia sobro.

  35. Praying afterwards, they concluded God was telling them he wanted that work to continue. That is how the Lord’s Food Bank at the Juarez dump got started. The Lord continues to multiply our resources to sustain his four Food Banks. Glory to God! Thanks be to God almighty, and to his Son Our Lord Jesus, who continues to multiply his miracles! Glory to God!
