The Bacteria! • The disease was caused by Yersinia pestis. • Bacillus ( rod shaped ). • Affects humans and animals. • It is found in wild rodents: rats, mice, squirrels, etc. • Transmitted from a bite, fleas, or inhaling it. • It doesn't take long for the bacteria to kill, most untreated patients will die within 48 hours.

  3. Symptoms of Black Death • The symptoms of the bubonic plague include: • Chills • Fevers • Coughing • Rapid pulse • Low blood pressure • Enlarged lymph nodes (common in the groin)

  4. Effects of Black Death • The effects are: • Your lymph nodes will get very swollen and tender • Your skin becomes red • The death rate is 60% for untreated victims, caused by sepsis.

  5. Treat this By • First you should be hospitalized. • There are then antibiotics for you to take. • The antibiotics are called: • Gentamycic • Streptomycic

  6. Where in the World?? • In the middle ages it was found in Europe • Killed a third of the population • Today it can be anywhere, but it is a lot more rare then it was in the middle ages

Interesting Information • The medieval people made up a rhyme for the Bubonic Plague. • “Ring around the rosy, pocket full of posy, ashes ashes, we all fall down.” • The rosy rings are the swollen lymph nodes • Pocket full of posy is, people would put herbs in there pockets as a treatment method • Ashes, ashes was for the burning fever • We all fall down was then people died
