  3. I. Alexander’s Background A. He was born in 356 B.C., son of Macedonian king Philip II. B. In 338 B.C., Philip defeated Athens in battle and quickly conquered and united all of Greece. No more independent city-states! C. In 336 B.C., Philip was assassinated and 20 year old Alexander becomes King of Macedonia and Greece.

  4. II. Alexander’s Accomplishments • Goals: 1. Spread Greek culture across the world 2. Continue his father’s legacy of military conquest 3. Get revenge on the Persian Empire B. By the time he died at the age of 32, Alexander had: 1. Conquered the Persian Empire and taken control of Asia Minor, Syria, Palestine and Egypt. 2. Spread the Greek Empire across Africa and Central Asia (spread of Greek ideas = rise of the Hellenistic Era).
