Turning on Line Numbering File, Page Setup… line numbers may be used for certain legal papers or for reference purposes
Using Bookmarks Useful in long documents to quickly move the insertion point. To insert a bookmark: Insert, Bookmark To display bookmarks: Tool, Options, View To move to a bookmark: Insert, Bookmark type a unique name select name select Go To
Using AutoText Useful for items or text that you use on a frequent basis. key desired text with formatting, then… key a short name can also Insert or Delete using Insert, AutoText menu command To insert: key inAutoText name - press Enter or F3 edit by making changes and then saving with same AutoText entry name
Inserting a Nonbreaking Space To avoid breaking up words or phrases on separate lines that should remain together. Nonbreaking space inserted with Ctrl + Shift + spacebar turn on display of nonprinting characters - Show/Hide normal space appears as a dot nonbreaking space appears as a degree symbol

Hyphenating Words Hyphenating long words that fall at the end of the text line provides a more balanced look. Automatic Tools, Language, Hyphenation Manual Tools, Language, Hyphenation change options scroll through document to check hyphens reposition hyphen, or
Hyphenating Words • Remove Hyphens • Undo immediately after inserting (removes all hyphens) • - Find and Replace (removes only selected hyphens) measured from right margin if a word starts after the beginning of the hyphenation zone and continues past the end, the word is wrapped decreasing hyphenation zone more words will be hyphenated increasing hyphenation zone fewer words will be hyphenated • Inserting Hyphens • hyphen on keyboard = regular hyphen • - hyphenation = optional hyphen (appears only if word falls at the end of text line); can also be inserted with Ctrl + Hyphen key (-)
One-Syllable Words: do not divide (e.g. length) Multiple-Syllable Words: divide between syllables some divisions can confuse a reader if one or both parts may be read as words by themselves (e.g. coin-sure) in such cases, break the word at a different place (e.g. co-insure) Prefixes, Suffixes: divide after a prefix and before a suffix if the root word ends in a double consonant, divide after (e.g. bill-ing) if adding a suffix results in a double consonant, divide between (e.g. refer-ring) Consecutive Line Ends: avoid more than two Abbreviations, Numbers, Contractions: do not divide Names of People: avoid if necessary, hyphenate according to guidelines for common words Dash: do not divide before a dash (or between the hyphens if the dash consists of two hyphens) Hyphenation Guidelines
Creating a Dropped Capital Letter Format, Drop Cap… drop cap can be set in same font as paragraph, or can be set in a complimentary font change position and options for more than one letter, select the word before apply drop cap
Customizing Toolbars • Add buttons for features used on a consistent basis. • Remove buttons you do not need. • Move or reset the position of the buttons. Tools, Customize… to remove: click the desired option to add: click the desired option
Customizing Menus Tools, Customize… drag and drop the desired command to the specific menu option on the Menu bar remove by clicking desired menu option on the Menu bar and dragging off the menu create your own customized menu
Automatically Summarizing a Document Tools, AutoSummarize… specifies where you want the summary inserted chooses highest-scoring sentences to summarize
