The Day of Atonement.

1. The Day of Atonement. Lev 23.26-32

2. Feasts of Jehovah Out of these feasts, the 6th feast is unique one. Why? 1. The feast of Passover Lev 23.5 2. The feast of Unleavened bread Lev 23.6-8 3. The feast of Firstfruits Lev 23.9-14 4. The feast of Pentecost Lev 23.15-16 5. The feast of Trumpets Lev 23.23-25 6. The day of Atonement Lev 23.26-32 1)The Peculiar Day 7. The feast of Tabernacles Lev 23.33-43 2)The Perfect future fulfillment 3)The Procedure (order of future events).

I) The Peculiar Day(Lev 23.27) • Lev 23.27Also on the tenth day of this seventh month there shall be a day of atonement it shall be an holy convocation unto you; and ye shall afflict your souls… day of atonement • This is the Day of Atonement • Day of atonement is also known as the “day of covering” • It means to cover the sins of guilty person by offering a sacrifice • On this day, people used to cover their last year’s sins by Propitiation • It was done by shedding the blood of an animal (Lev 17.11).

4. I) The Peculiar Day(Lev 23.27) • Lev 23.27Also on the tenth day of this seventh month there shall be a day of atonement it shall be an holy convocation unto you; and ye shall afflict your souls… ye shall afflict your souls… • This is the day to afflict their souls • “Afflict your souls” means to be sensitive for sins, to feel sorry for sins, to humble yourself N • What they do to afflict their souls on that day • 1. They will fast on that day • 2. They will not take bath in order to feel uneasy • 3. They will not use perfume etc • 4. They will abstain from marital relationship • 5. They will walk barefoot on that day • 6. They will read the book of Jonah on that day. N.

5. I) The Peculiar Day • Heb 9.7But into the second went the high priest alone once every year, not without blood, which he offered for himself, and for the errors of the people went the high priest alone once every year • This is the day for high priest’s entry in M. Holy place • This is the only day where high priest . is permitted to enter in the Most Holy . place (Heb 9.7,Lev 16.11-19).

6. I) The Peculiar Day • This is the day of six fold atonement • The word “Atonement” has occurred 16 times in Leviticus 16 • On this day the ministry of the high priest was of utmost importance • On this day, atonement was done for six different things Atonement for person Lev 16.6a, 11,17,24 • Atonement for High priest Lev 16.6, 11,17 • Atonement for High priest’s house Lev16.17, 24,33 • Atonement for Israel Atonement for equipments • Atonement for holy place Lev 16.16, 20,33 • Atonement for tabernacle 16.16, 20,33 • Atonement for altar Lev 16.18, 20,33.

7. II) The perfect future fulfillment • Day of Atonement (Yom Kippur) • The Hebrew word for the Day of Atonement is “Yom Kippur” (‘day like Purim’) • ‘Purim’ is first mentioned in the book of Esther • In the book Ester, Jews were destined for destruction but God miraculously saved them • Similarly, at the end of the great tribulation Lord Jesus will deliver the people of Israel • As the Feast of trumpets will fulfill by the rapture of church and regatheringof Israel, likewise the Day of Atonement will be fulfilled by Israel passing from the great tribulation • Church will not go through tribulation but the children of Israel will go through tribulation.

8. II) The perfect future fulfillment • Heb 9.28So Christ was once offered to bear the sins of many; and unto them that look for him shall he appear the second time without sin unto salvation that look for him the second time unto salvation • Who is looking (waiting) for Him (Lord Jesus)? • Today two people are waiting for Lord, they are church & Jews • Church is waiting for Him for rapture • But Jews are not waiting for rapture but waiting for their Messiah for establishing His Kingdom • For them (Jews) He (LJC) will appear second time (2nd stage of 2nd advent) • When Lord appeared first, all Jews were not saved, they rejected Him (Jn 1.11) • But for this second time, He will save them all (Mt 23.39, Rom 11.26) and then He will be their King.

9. III) The Procedure (order of future events) 1. Lord will come for Israel but where? 1. Lord will come for Israel but where? 2. Lord will come for Israel but how? • Zech14.4And his feet shall stand in that day upon the mount of Olives, which is before Jerusalem on the east, and the mount of Olives shall cleave in the midst thereof toward the east and toward the west, and there shall be a very great valley; and half of the mountain shall remove toward the north, and half of it toward the south 3. Lord will come what will be the situation? 4. Lord will come what He will do for them? • Acts 1.11 Which also said, Ye men of Galilee, why stand ye gazing up into heaven? this same Jesus, which is taken up from you into heaven, shall so come in like manner as ye have seen him go into heaven • Lord will come on the same mount of Olives from where He ascended into heaven.

10. 2. Lord will come for Israel but how? a) He will come on the white horse • Rev 19.11 And I saw heaven opened, and behold a white horse; and he that sat upon him was called Faithful and True, and in righteousness he doth judge and make war.

Lord will come for Israel but how? a) He will come on the white horse b) He will come with the saints • Jude 1.14b … Behold, the Lord cometh with ten thousands of his saints, • Zech 14.5b … and the LORD my God shall come, and all the saints with thee • 1 Thes 3.13 To the end he may stablish your hearts unblameable in holiness before God, even our Father, at the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ with all his saints • When Lord will come for church we will go with Him, but when He will come for Israel, we shall come with Him.

12. 2. Lord will come for Israel but how? a) He will come on the white horse b) He will come with the saints c) He will come with the armies of heaven • Rev 19.14 And the armies which were in heaven followed him upon white horses, clothed in fine linen, white and clean.

13. When it seems that Jerusalem & Israelites will be completely ruined, at that time Lord will appear 3. Lord will come what will be the situation? • All the nations will gather against Israel (Jerusalem) • Pslm 83.3-5 They have taken crafty counsel against thy people, and consulted against thy hidden ones. 4 They have said, Come, and let us cut them off from being a nation; that the name of Israel may be no more in remembrance. 5 For they have consulted together with one consent: they are confederate against thee • Israelites will get divine help at the last moment just like at the time of crossing the red sea. • Zech 14.2For I will gather all nations against Jerusalem to battle; and the city shall be taken, and the houses rifled, and the women ravished; and half of the city shall go forth into captivity, and the residue of the people shall not be cut off from the city

14. 4. Lord will come what He will do for them? a) He will fight against the enemy of Israel • Zech 14.3 Then shall the LORD go forth, and fight against those nations, as when he fought in the day of battle • Rev 19.15 And out of his mouth goeth a sharp sword, that with it he should smite the nations: and he shall rule them with a rod of iron: and he treadeth the winepress of the fierceness and wrath of Almighty God • The deliverance on the day of atonement is twofold, physical and spiritual (like coming out of Egypt).

Lord will come what He will do for them? a) He will fight against the enemy of Israel b) He will rescue the nation Israel, from their enemy • Joel 3.16 The LORD also shall roar out of Zion, and utter his voice from Jerusalem; and the heavens and the earth shall shake: but the LORD will be the hope of his people, and the strength of the children of Israel • Zech 12.9 And it shall come to pass in that day, that I will seek to destroy all the nations that come against Jerusalem • Zech 12.8 In that day shall the LORD defend the inhabitants of Jerusalem; and he that is feeble among them at that day shall be as David; and the house of David shall be as God, as the angel of the LORD before them he that is feeble among them at that day shall be as David; • He that is feeble among them at that day shall be as David N.

16. 4. Lord will come what He will do for them? a) He will fight against the enemy of Israel b) He will rescue the nation Israel, from their enemy c) Israel will recognize Him • Like Paul, when he saw LJC, he was transformed immediately, • Like Thomas, when he saw the marks of crucifixion, he immediately identified Him, • Similarly, when children of Israel will see Him coming on clouds, they will recognize Him • They will ask Him about the marks on His hands • Zech 13.6 And one shall say unto him, What are these wounds in thine hands? Then he shall answer, Those with which I was wounded in the house of my friends • He will say, I was wounded in the house of my friends • Israelites are His friend (Jn 3.28-20), church is His bride.

Lord will come what He will do for them? a) He will fight against the enemy of Israel b) He will rescue the nation Israel, from their enemy c) Israel will recognize Him d) Israel will mourn & repent • Zech 12.10 And I will pour upon the house of David, and upon the inhabitants of Jerusalem, the spirit of grace and of supplications: and they shall look upon me whom they have pierced, and they shall mourn for him, as one mourneth for his only son, and shall be in bitterness for him, as one that is in bitterness for his firstborn • They will be happy to recognize Him, but soon their happiness will change into mourning, because of their past treatment to Messiah.

18. The national mourning and repentance of Israel • Zech 12.12-13And the land shall mourn, every family apart; the family of the house of David apart, and their wives apart; the family of the house of Nathan apart, and their wives apart 13 The family of the house of Levi apart, and their wives apart; the family of Shimei apart, and their wives apart 14 All the families that remain, every family apart, and their wives apart the land shall mourn every family the family of the house of David their wives family of the house of Nathan their wives family of the house of Levi their wives family of Shimei their wives All the families that remain their wives • The land shall mourn : This is the mourning of all nation • Every family shall mourn : This is the mourning of all families • Family of David shall mourn : This is the mourning of royal family • Family of Nathan shall mourn : This is the mourning of prophet’s family • Family of Levi shall mourn : This is the mourning of priestly family • Family of Shimei shall mourn : This is the mourning of rebellion family • All remaining family shall mourn : This is the mourning of remaining people • Wives shall mourn : This is the mourning of women. • So eventually all the nation of Israel will mourn & repent on that day.

19. 4. Lord will come what He will do for them? a) a) He will fight against the enemy of Israel b) b) He will rescue the nation Israel, from their enemy c) c) Israel will recognize Him d) d) Israel will mourn & repent • Lord will do first 2 things and remaining 2 things Israel will . do, afterward the outcome will be….. e) Israel nation will be saved • Zech 13.1 In that day there shall be a fountain opened to the house of David and to the inhabitants of Jerusalem for sin and for uncleanness a fountain • A Fountain • Lord Jesus is the fountain of living waters • Jn 4.10 …and he would have given thee living water • Jn 4.10 …but the water that I shall give him shall be in him a well of water springing up into everlasting life • Rev 21.6 …I will give unto him that is athirst of the fountain of the water of life freely.

20. 5) Israel nation will be saved • Zech 13.1 In that day there shall be a fountain opened to the house of David and to the inhabitants of Jerusalem for sin and for uncleanness a fountainopened • A Fountain opened • On mount Horeb(Exo 17.6) Moses smite the rock & water started flowing • But on mount Calvary, another Fountain (Lord Jesus) was opened • On mount Horeb, Israelites drank the water abundantly, but they rejected unknowingly and drank not from the this Fountain on Calvary • John 4.10 Jesus answered and said unto her, If thou knewestthe gift of God, and who it is that saith to thee, Give me to drink; thou wouldest have asked of him, and he would have given thee living water • On the day of atonement, this fountain will not be opened again but their eyes will be opened and they will see the Fountain (LJC) and come to Him.

21. 5) Israel nation will be saved • Zech 13.1 In that day there shall be a fountain opened to the house of David and to the inhabitants of Jerusalem for sin and for uncleanness to the house of David and to the inhabitants of Jerusalem • A Fountain opened for Israel • On that day (day of atonement), this Fountain will be purely for the repentance & salvation of Israelites • Rom 11.26And so all Israel shall be saved: as it is written, There shall come out of Sion the Deliverer, and shall turn away ungodliness from Jacob • There will not be another sacrifice for the salvation of these Israelites, but they will be saved on the basis of the death of Lord Jesus on Calvary**Sg
