Two Types of Data • Qualitative Data: consists of attributes, labels, or non-numerical entries. • Quantitative Data: Consists of numerical measurements or counts. • EX: Is the data Qualitative of Quantitative? • Carrying capacities of pick up trucks • Student ID numbers • Players numbers on a soccer team • Lengths of songs on MP3 player
Four Levels of Measurement • 1. Nominal Level: Qualitative data organized using names, labels, or qualities. No mathematical computations are made at this level. • 2. Ordinal Level: Qualitative or Quantitative data arranged in order (ranked), but differences between the categories are not meaningful.
3. Interval Level: Quantitative data that is ordered. Meaningful differences between data entries can be calculated. A zero entry represents a position on a scale, and not an inherent zero. • 4. Ratio Level: Quantitative data, similar to interval level, but a zero entry means an inherent zero. In other words, zero means NONE.
EX: Determine the type of data & the level of measurement. The top 5 teams in the final football college poll released in Jan 2010 are: 1. Alabama 2. Texas 3. Florida 4. Boise St 5. Ohio St The average ticket prices for 10 Broadway shows in 2009 are: $149 $128 $124 $91 $96 $106 $112 $95 $86 $74
