Borough of Manhattan Community College largest of 25 institutions of the City University of New York: over 26,000 students highly diverse student population: 42% Hispanic, 30% Black, 14% Asian highly diverse faculty and staff: #1 in US in diversity of managerial ranks mission to prepare students for degree completion, successful transfer, career achievement, lifelong learning, and civic participation emphasis on advancing equity and social justice

  3. BMCC's highest priority is to improve student success, not incrementally but dramatically.

  4. Designing for Success: An Approach to Strategic Planning outcomes are driven by design deep examination of factors affecting student success all students can learn under the right conditions shared responsibility across departments and divisions

Designing for Success: Strategic Planning Phase I: 2018-2019 180+ faculty and staff participated in five Designing for Success working groups and three subcommittees of Equity and Inclusion Task Force. 150+ students participated in forums to provide feedback on what we are doing well and what we need to do better. Recommendations and findings incorporated into Phase II

Designing for Success: Guided Pathways Elements in Phase I • Targeting courses most predictive of timely graduation • Comprehensive career exploration, development, and preparation • Exploration of meta-majors: Academic and Career Communities Degree maps Math pathways Holistic assessment at intake Default enrollment in co-requisite courses Strategic use of supplemental instruction and early alert

  9. Guided Pathways Implementation Challenges Faculty concerns about focus on career vs. content in majors Faculty concerns about “corporate influence” on higher education Governance and change Taking what works to scale

The Super Stars Study: Graduating in Three Years Against All Odds Profile: • Black and Latino males with average high school GPA of 70 • remedial needs • average family income of $24,000 Pathway to completion: • cohort program • full-time/ credit accumulation • tutoring/ passing classes/ no WU’s • immersion (to exit remediation) • major with a pathway to the baccalaureate and career

Designing for Success Phase II: Taking What Works to Scale • Redesign the New Student Enrollment Experience • Improve Learning and Engagement in the First Year • Integrate Career Development throughout the Student Experience • Improve Completion and Transfer rates through Integrated Support Services • Strengthen our Culture of Care for Students, Faculty, and Staff • Strengthen BMCC’s Role in a Thriving NYC and as a Leading Community College Nationally
