  31. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. This great American civil rights leader was born in Atlanta, Georgia in 1929. He graduated from segregated schools. Under segregation, black and white people went to separate schools and churches and used separate toilets, water fountains and lunch counters. Black people were thought to be inferior by most of the white majority society. King went to Crozer Theological Seminary in Pennsylvania and later graduated from Boston University. Like his father, King became a Baptist Minister. King committed to doing everything he could to change segregation laws so that black people were guaranteed fair and equal treatment. He was influenced by the nonviolence work of Mahatma Gandhi and he believed and taught nonviolence as a way of encouraging change. King participated in the bus boycott in December 1955 and over the years led many peaceful marches to protest unfair segregation laws. He was often beaten up, yelled at and treated badly during his efforts to bring awareness that “all men are created equal”. Perhaps King’s most important civil rights march was to Washington D.C. in 1963, where he delivered his famous “I Have A Dream” speech. He received the Nobel Peace Prize in 1964. Major civil rights laws were finally passed in 1960’s. Not everyone shared King’s beliefs. He was shot to death in April 1968. HOW WOULD YOU SHOW EMPATHY IN THESE SITUATIONS – ROLE PLAY: • YOUR FRIEND JUST GOT THE HIGHEST TEST GRADE IN ALL OF 7THGRADE CLASSES. • YOUR BEST FRIEND IS BULLYING SOME OF THE YOUNGER STUDENTS. • YOUR BEST FRIEND IS BEING BULLIED BY VIA TEXT, FACEBOOK ETC. • YOUR BEST FRIEND IS BEING BULLIED ON THE BUS BY SOME OLDER KIDS. • A FRIEND JUST HAD A BABY SISTER OR BROTHER. • A FRIEND HAS TO HAVE AN OPERATION. • A FRIEND’S GRANDFATHER DIED.
