Summary, 2017 • All time high • Total number of operations reported: 1633 • Number of operations for lung cancer: 703 • Number of operations performed by thoracoscopy: 816 • Few, if any country has better overview, treatment, and survival for lung cancer patients. • There is a slight decline in the proportion of females being operated for lung cancer – from 50 % in 2013 to 46 % in 2017. • Increasing proportion of limited resections in lung cancer surgery. Systematic lymph node dissection can probably be improved. • Some 40 % of the patients are now offered curative treatment; surgery (22 %), stereotacic radiation (8 %) or chemo- radiotherapy (8 %). • Very low mortality, both 30 and 90 days after surgery for lung cancer! • Continuously increasing survival after 1, 2 and 5 years in both men and women diagnosed with lung cancer. • No hospital in Norway can offer robotic technique in lung cancer surgery. The pronounced reduction in smoking seems to influence and reduce atherosclerotic disease earlier than lung cancer. The reduction in lung cancer is estimated to occur in the early 2030-ies *From Statistics Norway: https://www.ssb.no/en/helse/statistikker/royk

From the Cancer Registry of Norway, 2017 The proportion of the patients operated within the first two weeks after decision.
Global interest in cancer survival Significant improvements! Also in lung cancer - but still, near 80 % are dead after five years even in the countries with the best surveillance and survival.
Has stereotactic radiation had the same effect on lung cancer surgery as PCI have had on CABG? *Data from The Norwegian Register for Cardiac Surgery
No parallel to an increase in stereotactic treatment, surgery has increased
From the Cancer Registry of Norway, 2017* The percentageofthepatients diagnosedwithlung cancer that has beentreatedwithintention to cure – eg: • Surgery: 22% • Stereotacticradiation: 8 % • Chemo-radiation: 8 % • TOTAL: 38 % !! *Wide bars 2017, tiny bars 2016.
