  1. Disciples – Worship Jn. 4:19-24

  2. Definition: Proskuneo – pros (to, in the direction of), kuneo (to kiss, to show affection, to manifest love). “So when Christians come together to worship the Lord…they express their love and devotion. It is a beautiful and holy hour, and no man can truly understand its significance and meaning without being exalted and uplifted by the experience” (Franklin Puckett, Vanguard, 2-24-77).

  3. Mt. 15:9Cain, Gen. 4:3-5; Heb. 11:4 1 Jn. 3:12Nadab & Abihu, Lev. 10:1,2 Warning: Vain Worship

  4. Modern Day Examples Old Denominational – Mood music, choirs, robes, ritualistic service. New Denominational – Loud music, entertainment, applause, fun (Kitchens, social halls…R.O.C. - Aerobics, Pilates, Men’s basketball, Walking track, Weight watchers, Scrapbook night.) Pentecostal – emotionalism (swing, wave, clap), “get the Spirit on Sunday” live as you please the rest of the week.

  5. Col. 3:17 Anything Without Authority Adding water and leavened bread to Lord’s supper Monthly, Quarterly, Annual observance Praying through Mary, other “saints” Instrumental music

  6. (condensed from Bill Hall) VAIN – NOT IN SPIRIT 11:15 – Sermon begins 11:21 – Rain begins, men roll up windows 11:26 – Preacher hopes point 2 will be better…Little Julie runs to Grandma; Bobby passed over seat to Aunt Lillian 11:34 – Preacher sure no one listened to first two points…Little Sam jumps up to go to rest room, grins at everybody as goes

  7. More of the Same 11:39 – Little Jill is reminded that she needs to go, now it is Joe’s time and parade continues to end 11:42 – If he can just get the last point across …bro. Smith’s snoring has young people in hysterics 11:45 – Preacher begins conclusion…everyone grabs song books, all babies returned to mothers 11:50 – Congregation thanks the Lord they were able to worship Him… And how terrible the thought – God observed it all! Acts 10:33

  8. Why Do We Worship God? He does not need it – but He deserves it! “Nor is He worshipped with men’s hands, as though He needed anything, since He gives to all life, breath, and all things” (Acts 17:25). “God is greatly to be feared in the assembly of the saints, and to be held in reverence by all those who are around Him” (Ps. 89:7).

  9. Worship Shows Respect “This is what the Lord says: Heaven is my throne, and the earth is my footstool. Where is the house you will build for me? Where will my resting place be? Has not my hand made all these things, and so they came into being? Declares the Lord. This is the one I esteem: he who is humble and contrite in spirit, and trembles at my word” (Is. 66:1,2, NIV).

  10. Reverence at Mt. Sinai Ex. 19:16-19 We serve the same God! Heb. 12:28,29 Why does courtroom stand? The guests – when the bride enters? The audience – when casket rolled out? What does our attire and action indicate when we are in the presence of God?

  11. Worship in spirit and truth • Not Between • Insincere and Sincere • Ex. 25:2 • Error and Truth • Jn. 4:22 • Between • The OldandThe New • Heb. 9:9,10; 10:1

  13. Conclusion • Truth (alethinos) – “describes that which is not only true but also completely what it professes to be…The popular sense of the word ‘ideal’ – fulfilling the complete conception – comes near to this usage” (Westcott on John). • Cp. Jn. 1:17 • The real worship is more consistent with the nature of God (Jn. 4:24)…by those who want to, not have to, worship (Ps. 122:1; 34:3).
