  1. Joint IEEE-SA and ITU Workshop on Ethernet ITU-T G-Series Supplement 52 Overview G.8032 Usage and Operational Considerations Marc Holness, Product Line Architect, Ciena

  2. Supplement 52 to ITU-T G-series Recommendation • Provides supplemental information to Ethernet Ring Protection (ERP) Recommendation ITU-T G.8032 • Ethernet services support • Ring interconnections • Network applications • Guidelines for configuration and management procedures • Multiple Ethernet ring protection instances protection switching • End-to-end network/service resiliency involving G.8032

  3. G.8032 Overview G.8032 is an Ethernet ring protection protocol: Provides efficient network connectivity Provides rapid service restoration (sub 50ms protection) Provides ring interconnections Provides localized service restoration from a network fault Utilizes standard IEEE 802.1Q (bridging) and IEEE 802.3 (MAC) Is client and server layer agnostic Supports operator commands (e.g., manual/force switch, do not revert, clear, etc.) Geneva, Switzerland, 13 July 2013 3

  4. G.8032 Basic Concepts A G.8032 ring is simply a logical construct that provides resiliency over a “closed loop” formed over a physical network infrastructure Multiple ERP instances (e.g., virtual rings) can be provided over a single G.8032 [logical] ring 4

  5. G.8032 Support of E-LINE Services A 2-node G.8032 ring can provide linear protection switching in support of E-LINE services MAC learning can be enabled or disabled on the ring nodes CE1 CE2 A B G.8032 F E C D C D CE1 CE2 A B G.8032 F E 1+1 Linear Protection 1:1 Linear Protection Geneva, Switzerland, 13 July 2013 5

  6. G.8032 Support of E-TREE Services G.8032 can act as a server layer providing resiliency (sub-50ms protection switching) for an E-TREE service CE2 CE2 C C CE1 CE1 CE3 CE3 A A B B G.8032 G.8032 D D CE4 CE4 Root (A)  Leaf nodes Leaf  Root (A) Geneva, Switzerland, 13 July 2013 6

  7. G.8032 Support of E-LAN Services G.8032 [naturally] supports services with a multipoint topology (e.g., E-LAN services) CE13 CE14 CE13 CE14 C D C D CE1 CE2 CE15 CE10 A B G.8032 A B G.8032 CE10 VR-1 F E F E VR-2 CE12 CE11 CE12 CE11 Geneva, Switzerland, 13 July 2013 7

  8. G.8032 Ring Interconnections G.8032 defines two ring constructs {major-rings and sub-rings} which can be interconnected (much like “LEGO building blocks”) NOTE: Network loop freeness of active forwarding path is maintained (during normal state and during all protection switching events) for all interconnection scenarios. 8

  9. G.8032 Network Applications G.8032 (with ring interconnection capabilities) can provide resilient (sub-50ms) service restoration for various network applications Site-to-site Layer 2 VPNs Ethernet Private Line Wholesale Ethernet access 3G/4G cell site Mobile Backhaul Ethernet access to IP services Delivery of Private Cloud services Residential services Geneva, Switzerland, 13 July 2013 9

  11. G.8032 End-to-end Resiliency G.8032 can act as a server layer providing rapid (sub-50ms) protection for higher layer protocols (e.g., G.8031, MPLS-TP, etc.) G.8032 can also provide Resilient dual-homed interconnect via a sub-ring interconnect of a non-ERP node (that is based on a standard L2 bridge) Service restoration when a non-ERP node (that is based on a standard L2 bridge) is participating in the ring Client Layer Protection A G.8032 Server Layer Physical Infrastructure A 11
