  2. Muscles can be classified in various ways

  4. Grading of force by varying voltage: recruitment

  5. Forces of parallel motor units add linearly Increasing voltage progressively activates all motor units

  6. The size principle: motor units are recruited in order of their size. Small motor units have small motor neurons and they are recruited first. Large motor units have large motor neurons and they are recruited last.

  7. Muscle force is graded by frequency of stimulation

  8. Muscle force depends on muscle length

  9. Isotonic force is measured at constant afterload

  10. Velocity of muscle contraction varies inversely with muscle force

  11. Power peaks at one-third maximum force

  12. Power peaks at about one-third maximum velocity

  13. Muscles lengthen in eccentric “contractions”

  14. Different contraction types have different functions

  15. Muscle fiber orientation differs greatly among the muscles
