C Chatty Beetle
Chatty Beetle • 3-year ‘global’ pilot to develop / test a two – way text paging system – for alert and notification. • Funded by USAID/OFDA in partnership with NOAA-NWS (IAO, PR HQ), Australia BoM, and others.
Chatty Beetle • Uses Iridium Short Burst Data (SBD) as primary communications link. • Terminals hardened to withstand environmental conditions, and to operate on battery for 36+ hours.
Chatty Beetle • Current Status: • 1.5 years into pilot. • ~100 units in field. • Most changes involve better operational integration. • Examining new carriers / links, and form factors.
RAPIDCast • Remote Asia Pacific Information Dissemination BroadCast • RAPIDCast has the simple goal of providing remote areas of the Pacific with access to warning, agricultural, and related information.
RAPIDCast • Starting as a 3-year pilot / demonstration. • Funding provided by USAID / OFDA in partnership with NOAA NWS (IAO, PR HQ) and Australia BoM.
RAPIDCast • Plan to start ~August 2011 as a 128kbps service bursting to 512kbps. • Initial content to be a regionally relevant sub-set of EMWIN and LRIT.
Other Activities of Interest • GEONETCast • RANET maintains a 64kbps channel on GEONETCast Americas and GEONETCast Africa (EUMETCAST). • Lots of content development work to go, but proceeding, and adding new stations later this FY.
Other Activities of Interest • HF E-Mail • NZ Met and Australia BoM have developed and maintained an HF e-mail network throughout the Pacific. • Continued expansion and upgrades occurring in N. Pacific. • Exploring a region-wide HF digital broadcast for short notifications or similarly very small payloads.
Other Activities of Interest • Community FM Radio • RANET takes its name from radio. • Popular in areas where no broadcast services exist, or services are centralized and not of local interest. • Diversity of operation. • Very broad impact beyond hydro-met and DRR.
