Safety barriers are tested as a system Performance depends upon: Amount & location of steel Connection to next barrier Amount of concrete (mass) Barrier shape Ground - barrier connection Tested system performance should be the focus, ‘Shape’ should not be at the forefront, as it often is in Australia. An F-type shape with too much, or too little reinforcement, will have worse passenger outcomes than many other shapes. Delta Bloc have tested this. Passenger outcomes are diminished when parts of different systems are combined and performance is predicted, not tested. Australia is doing this. Delta Bloc will not.

Summary • MASH & EN1317 are good, similar safety barrier specifications, EN1317 focusses more on minimising injuries. • Safer barrier options are available overseas, and will be available in Australia shortly. • Safety barrier performance depends on many factors - mass, steel content, ground connection, end connections, shape. • The barrier system must be crash tested to ensure performance. • Europe has moved from heavy rigid systems in the late 90‘s, towards safer, lighter, energy absorbing systems.
