Nimrod Nimrod was a prototype for the Anti-Christ.
Contextual Insights • Genesis 10 and 11 are in reversed chronological order. • Although the confusion of languages with its resultant scattering of peoples seems to be an act of judgment, remember that it is the development of nationalism which has, up to this point, thwarted the political movement toward a one world government. Therefore, this was in a sense another blessing of God. • For the Christian, Pentecost was the theological reversal of the Tower of Babel!
Genesis 11 (NRSV) 11 Now the whole earth had one language and the same words. 2 And as they migrated from the east, they came upon a plain in the land of Shinar and settled there. (Oldest Known Language Cuneiform Sumerian)
Genesis 11 3 And they said to one another, “Come, let us make bricks, and burn them thoroughly.” And they had brick for stone, and bitumen (tar/pitch) for mortar. (Bricks are man made, but stone/rock is made by God) Matthew 7:24-7
Blatant Disobedience The people of Genesis 11 are in blatant disobedience to Genesis 9:1. 9 God blessed Noah and his sons, and said to them, “Be fruitful and multiply, and fill the earth.
Genesis 11 4 Then they said, “Come, let us build ourselves a city, and a tower with its top in the heavens, and let us make a name for ourselves; otherwise we shall be scattered abroad upon the face of the whole earth.”
Genesis 11 5 The Lord came down to see the city and the tower, which mortals had built. 6 And the Lord said, “Look, they are one people, and they have all one language; and this is only the beginning of what they will do; nothing that they propose to do will now be impossible for them.
Genesis 11 7 Come, let us go down, and confuse their language there, so that they will not understand one another’s speech.” 8 So the Lord scattered them abroad from there over the face of all the earth, and they left off building the city.
Genesis 11 9 Therefore it was called Babel, because there the Lord confused the language of all the earth; and from there the Lord scattered them abroad over the face of all the earth. (Nationalism’s BDAY) Babel = Gate of God / Hebrew = Confusion
Genesis 11:4 The Key verse / statements are all in Genesis 11:4: • They aim to build a city. • They aim to build a tower to reach into the heavens. • They aim to make a name for themselves. • They aim not to be dispersed over the whole earth.
Babel is Your Story The city the tower are the outward expression of the sins. What are the sins? Let’s make them plain, because they are yours and mine! • The love of human praise. • The love of security.
God’s Will For You God’s will is not that we find our joy from the praise of other people, but that we find our joy in knowing and praising HIM.
God’s Will For You God’s will in not that we find our security in things we can build, places we can go, and things we can rig with locks and alarms. We are to find our security in HIM, and in glad obedience to HIM. Ref. (Matthew 8:20)
Trinity in Genesis 7 Come, let US go down, and confuse their language there, so that they will not understand one another’s speech.”
The Lineage of Jesus Jesus came through the lineage of Shem, and most likely spoke Aramaic.
Lineage of Terah Terah was the father of Abram, and chapters 12-50 are dedicated to the lineage of Abram/Abraham.
Kingdom Carryout • The disunity and dispersion of this story are reversed in the New Testament. • Acts 2, on the day of Pentecost (Holy Spirit). • The Gospel in one tongue. • Not about people making a name for themselves, but about the one name alone – the name of JESUS!
