  7. Types of wired and wireless Networks What are the different types of Networks? Wide Area Network (WAN) Collection of computers and networks connected together using resources supplied by a ‘third part carrier’ such as BT. Uses cables, satellites and radio waves. Spreads over a wide geographical area. Local Area Network LAN Covers a small geographical area. Consists of a collection of computers and peripheral devices connected together. LAN is often owned by a single person or organisation VIRTUAL A subset of computers connected together as part of a large physical network. This can be set up when an employee in a remote location needs to connect to a private network. Communications can be encrypted.
