  1. Romeo and Juliet:Let’s meet…

  2. Before we start reading the play…. • Let’s find out what we can about some of the major characters based inferences we can make by at direct characterization: • What they look like • How they are described and indirect characterization: • What they do • What they say • What people say to them Not sure how to do that? Let’s do an example together! Huzzah!

  3. What can you tell me about the Nurse…based on what she looks like?

  4. What can you tell me about the Nurse…based on what her actions? Tells long-winded stories about Juliet’s childhood that tend to lead into another, and then another, and then another…… Agrees to carry messages between Romeo and Juliet in preparation for the secret wedding. Gets Romeo to comfort Juliet after the murder (by Romeo) of her cousin, Tybalt. Tells Juliet to forget Romeo and marry Paris once her father threatens to disown her if she refuses to marry Paris.

  5. What can you tell me about the Nurse…based on what is said about or to her by others? Lady Capulet: “This is the matter.- Nurse, give leave a while, we must talk in secret.- Nurse, come back again. I have remembered me, thou’ hear our counsel.” (On realizing she needs the Nurse’s help to talk to her own daughter) Lord Capulet: “Peace, you mumbling fool! Utter your gravity o’er a gossips bowl, for here we need it not!” (In response to the Nurse defending Juliet as he yelled at her) Juliet: “Ancient damnation, O most wicked fiend! Is it more sin to wish me thus forsworn or to dispraise my lord with that same tongue which she hath praised him with above compare so many times? Go, counselor. Thou and my bosom henceforth shall be twain.” (To herself, after the Nurse advises her to forget her marriage to Romeo and marry Paris)

  6. What can you tell me about the Nurse…based on what she says? “Thou wast the prettiest babe that e’er I nursed. An I might live to see thee married once, I have my wish.” (To Juliet) “An he speak anything against me, I’ll take him down , an he were lustier than he is, and twenty such jacks. An if I cannot, I’ll find those that shall. Scurvy nave! I’m none of his flirt-gills. I’m none of his skain-smates.”(In response to Mercutio’s harassment) “But first let me tell you, if you should lead her in a fool’s paradise, as they say, it were a very gross kind of behavior, as they say. For the gentlewoman is young; and therefore, if you should deal double with her, truly it were an ill thing to be offered to any gentlewoman and very weak dealing, too.” (On first meeting Romeo)

  7. Your task…. • Following the example we just did together, use the information provided your group to make inferences about your assigned character. • Tips: • You can use any of the sheets in your packet to gather information about your character. • Think about how a line might be delivered, as well as why. • Try make your adjectives as descriptive and precise as possible…it will make your final task MUCH easier.

  8. Your super fun synectics task! • Based on the inferences you made, create a list of descriptive adjectives or phrases for your character. • Think of foods that can also be described by the adjectives and phrases you chose for your character. • Decide, as a group, on a dish that best represents your character. • Create a poster, which does the following: • Names your character • Describes your character with vivid details and catchy phrases • Names your food • Explains how your character is that food • Has some visual flare or interest
