  1. SRH/HIV SITUATION IN UGANDA PREPARED BY DRS. JUSTINE, CATHERINE, ANN, GLORIA. PRESENTED BY DR. JUSTINE. W

  2. SITUATION ANALYSIS • HIV/AIDS prevalence in Uganda is 6.1 • IDI has 20,000 registered patients and 70% women of reproductive age (15-54yrs). • There are 6000 young adults (16-24 yrs) attending a special clinic and about 500 discordant couples

  3. In 2007 • Family planning use was 24% same as national average. • High rate of unwanted pregnancies. • Loss to follow up of young adults. • No data on young adults and discordant couples

  4. At the moment • Started young adults and discordant couple clinics with specific HIV physicians. Increased knowledge in positive prevention. • Introduced Family planning into the clinic. • Introduced SRH clinic to follow up pregnant women and those with other reproductive health needs. • Proportion of Unintended pregnancies has reduced. • More patients using dual protection (condoms plus another FP method)

  5. challenges • Consistent condom use in a long lasting relationship….failure leads to sero conversion of negative partner. • High rate of unintended pregnancies among young girls - inability to negotiate for safe sex, loss of hope for the future. • Increase in desire to have more children among PLWHA.

  6. Thanks

  7. references • End of funding evaluation of services offered through the HIV transition clinic and the discordant couple clinic-March 2010. • SRH survey 2007 • Infectious Diseases Clinic data
