  2. Background Information • Renaissance defined as “rebirth” or “a reconstruction” • It is known as the rise of the modern world. • More artistic freedom and individualism developed. • Areas most affected by this new wave of culture… • Italy • England (Britain)

Italy • Led to city-states • During 1400’s and 1500’s • Was caused be the constant uncertainty of economics, politics and history • There was growth in cultural and social experiments which formed a new culture • Most of the greatest inventions and ideas emerged in the times of great insecurity. • Usury (lending money at interest) was considered mortal sin; would guarantee damnation • Social Classes developed

Leonardo Da Vinci • Epitomized the genius and diversity of achievements that we associate with the Italian Renaissance. • Anatomist, engineer, mathematician, naturalist and philosopher, as well as a painter, sculptor and architect. • Achievements • “Last Supper” painting • He sketched the first parachute, first helicopter, first aeroplane, first tank, first repeating rifle, swinging bridge, paddle boat and first motor car. Da Vinci designed machines of war as well. He was one of the first artists to sketch outdoor portraits. Da Vinci was a sculptor and designer of costumes. He was also a mathematician and a botanist • Mona Lisa, (1404) which was famous for her mysterious smile when piano music played.
